Now you know they tried that once and it actually gave rise to more crime without significant reduced consumption.
That said, I personally have fewer than 4-6 glasses of wine a year so I would not miss alcohol... except for cleaning pipes.
Yes, I'm a lawyer and have known several high-functioning alcoholic lawyers who are excellent practitioners. Of course I'm not talking about wake-up-and-chug-vodka guys, but rather the three-drinks-at-lunch guys who keep bottles in their desks and drink after work every day, including at the office after business hours. It's pretty common in this profession, really. They'd probably characterize themselves as heavy drinkers, or even just alcohol connoisseurs, rather than alcoholics, though I'm not sure they could quit if they wanted to.
To be fair, I also know of at least two attorneys who have ruined their lives and careers over booze and drugs, though it's always involved a step to hard drugs. One of them got disbarred and is in prison. The other is one of the guys who inspired me to become an attorney. He got himself into trouble with cocaine, booze, and prescription drugs and died of a heart attack in his early 50's. He had some personal troubles that he did not address except with drug use, and it took the ultimate toll.

True. All the young(ish) boozy lawyers I know smoke as well, at least on occasion, and I ain't talkin' 'bout 'baccy
On the Job site (construction) It was 50/50.. some guys we had to ban from smoking because they couldn't remember a measurement... others suffered from pain without it. Then there's the junkies, they work for cheap and look like they're getting something done.. wrong, they just speed around in circles. haha
Unfortunately I would be one of the "can't remember a measurement" guys
Needless to say, I don't smoke much... turns me into a moron.
Actually, I can think of many examples: Hemingway, O’Neal, Faulkner... and that’s just this side of the pond.

Minimizing a hangover:
If you must drink, drink a non-flavored clear alcohol (Vodka etc.) and non-flavored seltzer mixer if you need to add anything.

It’s obviously a crutch but human existence sort of sets up to need vices and often self destructive distractions to elevate stress, oddly drunkenness can add insight once sober. I can’t say I make much sense when drunk or it makes me a more interesting person at the time but when I’m able to step away from it, I do feel I have learned things at times even if I can’t rememberer much of the conversations I’ve had.
