Yeah, that's what makes it offensive, not the price. There's a reason we're not all sitting around with cobs, this is just another level of it.
And this would probably had sold already if it wasn't for the damage what with the new money in China/Asia getting into pipesmoking.

Owning a pipe that you can't smoke? I don't cotton to that. That's like having a girlfriend that you can't kiss, or a dog you can't pet, or a cat you can't eat.
So, instead of buying the pipe, I'm thinking about a nice fountain pen

The thing is, I am sure they got paid out for the damage from the insurance company. I bet they are just trying to double dip on this thing.
If I liked it better, I would offer them $1200 with just that justification.
But I don't.

I am glad you didn't buy it. Unless you are a billionaire, no pipe is worth that kind of money. Also, paint on the bowl could ruin the taste. I have set an $800 limit on pipes, though I did get several which cost a little more before setting the limit.
