Good morning and welcome here, bore da a croeso yma, from the mid-Wales borders. That was a fine introduction, by the way.

Your question, addressed to Poo-Bah but answered by several others as well, is worth a thread on its own:
What's your favourite pipe and tobacco?

Made me think. I find that certain kinds of pipe seem to 'like' certain kinds of tobacco, and my acquisitions to date provide me with anything from a totally laid back 90-minute flake pipedream to a standing 10-minute crumble cake quick fix, as time and occasion afford. But... if forced at gunpoint to surrender all my pipes and tobaccos except one of each, I'd be left with Peterson's Irish Flake and my bent Barling Meerschaum billiard.

I like your attitude. Obsessive :) Do you pair beverages with your smokes?
> I find that certain kinds of pipe seem to 'like' certain kinds of tobacco

From my time on the various forums and YTPC, it does seem like some people assign certain pipes to certain types of tobaccos (Englishes, aromatics, Virginias, etc.). I don't think I've developed the palate or the pipe collection yet to even consider taking that approach.

A day or two ago, I placed Irish Flake in my online shopping cart to be ready for my next purchase, and I hope to get a meerschaum pipe one day!

Not exactly, but so far, I've found that when have the chance to enjoy a pipe and a drink, I've liked ales such as Old Speckled Hen and Guinness. Of course, a dram or two of a distilled liquor with a pipe is nice too, but I think the intensity of distilled liquors pairs better with a more intense smoke like a cigar. How about yourself?

Welcome from Scotland! Those look like lovely pipes to be starting with!

Favourite pipe and tobacco? I'm still working out what I like, and want different baccies depending on my mood. My favourite pipe is probably my Rattray's Fair Maid, and I probably smoke Solani Aged Burley Flake more than any other blend. View attachment 362583
Rattray's is one of the brands I've considered for my next pipe. And I haven't heard of Solani Aged Burley Flake -- will have to look into it!

> I also prefer Early Morning Pipe to Nightcap [...] and I'd recommend drying both out thoroughly before smoking

Thanks for the tip! Also have you tried G. L. Pease Chelsea Morning? Some people prefer that to Early Morning Pipe, which has piqued my curiosity such that I'm thinking of getting a tin of Chelsea Morning with my next order.

I'm yet to try a Solani blend I don't like, White and Black is another of theirs I'd recommend. We don't get GL Pease blends over here I'm afraid! I'm thinking about buying another Rattray's pipe, I really like the look of their Old Perth series

@pointlineplane I once saw someone claim in a review that Rattray's Marlin Flake is what God smokes: I am prepared to believe this, as the ways of the Almighty are inscrutable - but Peterson's Irish Flake is what Saint Peter puts in his Meerschaum.

I can't remember when I last smoked a cigar - oh wait - yes, I can: it was after a working dinner with a client, one evening in 2015. I accepted one and smoked with him out of courtesy, but I don't really get on with them for some reason - yet strangely, I do like Semois La Volute in a briar, which is somewhat cigar-like. That goes well, I find, with black coffee, a full-bodied red wine or a brandy. Possibly smokers of oriental blends might like Old Speckled Hen (I don't care for either) but I'm your man for a pint of Guiness with a dark fired VA/KY. But generally I smoke during the day (when I mostly have things to do and so prefer to stay sober) and avoid alcohol until the evening. Daytime smokes for me are generally accompanied either by black coffee, Russian caravan tea or Rooibos, my beverages of choice. For me, it's about rehydration as much as taste.
