Was using tamper and tools built into lighter. Then gradually started just using my finger and pipe nails 50/50. I too was concerned about scraping the pipe with the folded other parts of lighter and tools. Also seemed to get a better feel (aside from burning) when finger tamping. Wine cork is a must try.

b-Humy olivewood tamper when I can find it. Aristocob's long golf tees when I can't. I have about 20 of those tees laying around everywhere.

I don't have any fancy tampers. I use Czech tools, golf tees, pipe nails, regular nails or whatever is lying around. A lot of times I use the brass from a .308 shell casing. A piece of dowel and some empty .38 special or .357 mag shell casings will make several fine tampers. I have tampers of all sorts lying around all over the place. If I'm in the woods, a finger sized branch can be quickly converted into a serviceable tamper.

I get the deal with the brass and nails, but what do you do to get get ruttle out if you carry brass? With my Sheffield I can keep the cake trimed with the blade. I have never had to purchase a reamer. Plus a few strokes on a stone and you have a nice pocket knife as well.

I usually use sticks for tampers. A stick whittled to a knife edge (necessarily with a stick, a blunt knife edge) scrapes cake without worrying about gouging it.

'Course, if I'm out I always have a pocket knife and I have a cheap yard sale pocket knife in my back porch smoking area.

I use empty 30-06 or 8MM brass. Have buckets of them sitting around waiting for attention. It’s easy to just grab one and throw it in your pocket for the day. You can always tell where I do my pipe smoking...in the garage, on the porch, etc. the tell tell spent rifle cartridge is sitting there or found laying on the ground.
