GLP Must Have Blends

Almost everything in the Old London series is a big hit with me. Chelsea Morning may be the perfect morning smoke with a cup of coffee (can't vouch for tea). Gaslight, Quiet Nights, and Meridian are some of my favorite fall/winter smokes. Love Sixpence, too, but need to spend more time with that one.

I do not mean to be a wet blanket here, but I largely steer clear of GLP blends because of the recurring mold problems at C&D. I just do not relish the thought of finding something I like, laying some by, and then, in a couple of years, opening a tin of tobacco to find the contents grew a sweater.

I wish my thinking was otherwise. Pease and C&D do some fantastic things with tobacco, but they have been unable to exorcise the fungal demons from their process.

This terrifies me. I have just a few GLP (and C&D) tins in my cellar, but golly I’d hate to discover that they’ve gone moldy before I got to open and enjoy them.

I do not cellar with aging in mind, but I do cellar as a hedge against what I like disappearing or changing. I am very reluctant to cellar something I know has an above average chance of spoiling.

It isn’t that big of a deal. Most people never have an issue.

At least one of my GLP tins is slightly bowed out at the bottom, I can tell because it doesn't sit flush when I stack it. I know tobacco ferments in the tin, so my hope is that is what is causing it. I guess I will open it up sooner rather than later and settle the question.

A practical question: if a consumer discovers that the tobacco has molded in a sealed tin, is there any recourse from the manufacturer? Or is the consumer just shit outta luck?

The few instances of mold have been highly publicized, well corrected / compensated to the consumer, and rational minds seem to acknowledge that % production-wise, their "issues" are no greater than anyone else's.
I've never had a single bad one yet, and I've had lots of different blends from them.

When I'm playing it smart, I never open one UNTIL it has bulged for me. And they've always been delicious. When I don't get that delightful "WHOOSH" from popping the top, I always suspect it could have been just a little better.

I had one, a recent JKP tin. MrReeves personally answered my overnight email first thing in the morning and a replacement was out that day.

On the bulging note, I love that my stacks of GLP tins are are little leaning towers on the shelf.

I had a 17 year old 8 oz tin of Montgomery that I opened in 2022 that smoked like the business end of an acetylene torch. Unsmokable, so in the garbage it went.

Absolutely Not! It may have turned out to be a Great Smoke! Why would you ever throw out any tin of unopened tobacco? That makes no sense.

Why would you do that? is the tin compromised in any way?
Even if it is, you can try to rehydrate it.
The Montgomery tin was in perfect condition. I'd smoked it before without issue, but not at this age. Could have been a bad batch. Who knows? With aging tobacco it's always win some, lose some.

My favorites are Windjammer, Telegraph Hill, and Barbary Coast. Second tier (but still great) are Embarcadero and Geometrie. I don’t like Latakia, so I can’t offer any opinion on the blends he’s probably best known for.

Jack Knife Plug with age. It’s kind of sharp fresh but mellows into a deep earthy flavor.
I’m still exploring his Latakia catalogue, VaPers, and other blends. Hope to find some more favorites.

I bought 2 tins of every GL Pease blend and it is really fun knowing I will eventually try them all. Probably should have just bought one of each.

So funny how you say you think you should’ve bought one of each blend instead of two. I think it’s a really good strategy to buy one of each of his work, Drucquer&Sons included. Definitely don’t discount those and write them off as replayed work. He really has something for everyone and excels at more than just Latakia. Some I don’t care for whereas other’s really enjoy. His blends that do work for me are among my most revered blends in rotation. He has a knack for making each blend have its own character, no matter how similar it is to another. His casings and top notes he uses are unlike any other blending house on the market.
