Ghosted Meerschaum

So I bought a lightly used Altinay off Ebay recently..Some of you may have been bidding on the same pipe ...I get it and pack a bowl of five brothers in it and I can tell it has been ghosted by a perfumed tobacco..Is there anyway to remove the taste from it? It isn't very strong but noticeable.

Start with removing any cake from the chamber and giving the stem and shank a thorough cleaning. If the ghost is mild as you say then it may just take a few bowls to exorcise the ghost.

It's not bad...I think I can get it out with straight unflavored tobacco and some holy water

After cleaning as @renfield suggested, I would smoke Five Brothers or any other non- aromatic burley to finish off the ghost. It worked in the past on my briars so in theory it should work on meerschaum.

I’d just smoke 5-10 bowls of 5 Brothers back to back. That should do it. ️

I will try that and maybe some VA flake...It is very faint but tou can still taste it.

With a meerschaum you have to smoke it out. Like a sponge, that scent is soaked in deep. You can probably smell it on the outside of the pipe.

The above is right on. You'll just have to smoke whatever you like until the old tars are masked by new,

I will buy a new one when I can afford it but..I've always wanted one and it was lightly smoked..so I jumped on it...So for it smokes great!!

You may get some relief by a few flushes with very hot water (not hotter than the tap.) down the chamber and out the stem.

Meerschaum has lots of pore holes, but with cleaning and smoking 5-10 bowls, I’m sure it’s gone…. Does it even affect your smoke now? Mild ghosts don’t bother me, I chock them up to stuff people obsess about now, they never used to.

This is why I avoid estates. Hopefully it comes out with enough smokes as others have stated above.

I would sell it. As others have stated meerschaum has properties to be slow to soak in the flavors compared to briar. It will take a long time to re-ghost it IMO.

I have been trying to ghost a meerschaum with deer tongue, and have not succeeded. after a couple hundred smokes.

I've not even been able to ghost a briar with deertongue for more than a couple of smokes. I think it's just where deertongue blends aren't very damp. Aromatics will ghost a meerschaum after just a handful of smokes. My big Kenan from the outside smells like a cross between maple and coconut from the skull all the way down the length of the shank from the outside.

I think that I am going to give up, and start smoking more variety of blends in this meerschaum. I appreciate your experience and advise.

I’ve ghosted a meerschaum, briar, cob several times. I just plowed through Haunted Bookshop in the pipe for 5-10 times and all was well. ️

Good luck. You can get rid of ghosts in a meerschaum, but it is going to take a while.

Apparently a Burley blend on repeat will rinse the repulsiveness
