The clear plastic is a heat sealed anti-tamper device - if your tin had this on and was intact then it shows the tin has not been opened or tampered with in any way prior to you getting it and so the plastic wrap has indeed done its exact job.

No offense was meant. It doesn't work as an air-tight seal which in itself is an anti-tamper device. I am a huge fan of your product and have followed these threads obsessively. I am sorry that there was a problem with your tin supplier and as I've said I jar it or smoke it upon purchase.

I buy it in bulk then jar it for a few years. Goes dark and the various flavours meld together. Always moist with a beautiful rum, maple, molasses, spicy flavour.

One of my all time favourites. There really is nothing like it.

I just got a fresh tin of Rum Flake (now called "Jamaican Flake") from SmokingPipes earlier this week and tried it for the first time. The tobacco was quite moist out of the tin and had a strong licorice aroma but no detectable rum or Lakeland essence, and when I smoked it the only flavors I got were a bit of Virginia and a lot of Dark Fired Kentucky. No rum, licorice, or Lakeland essence; just plain Virginia and Dark Fired Kentucky. It basically tasted like a mellower version of Mac Baren's Old Dark Fired and was the first Gawith Hoggarth blend that I was actually rather disappointed with, though the tins of Bob's Chocolate Flake, Kendal Black Cherry, and Ennerdale I got in the same order were all great. They do seem to have removed the Lakeland essence from Bob's Chocolate Flake though, or at the least toned it down to the point that it's almost imperceptible.

Give Rum Flake a couple of weeks in the jar and then try it again. I wasn’t impressed either after the first smoke but after letting it sit in a jar for a few weeks it seems to really open up flavor wise. It’s one of my favorites now

I remember some guys strutting about who were able to get unobtainium and pushing this on the rest of us mopes who weren't so lucky. Their strategy was, they said, that they simply shopped elsewhere than the half-dozen major outlets. I put this to the test in search of 1792 a few weeks ago. Still unlucky.

Some days you get the candy, some days you get the wrapper. I'm assuming you're from the US; be aware here on the forums when folks start to mention a Gawith drop, or watch closely the "Recent TAD Pick-Ups" thread. Stay vigilant.

So I was going through some tins to open up and found a tin of GH Rum Flake. I’m not sure if this was talked about in past but I thought I remember it being discussed that the packaging wasn’t the best. It was cellophane sealed and sitting with rest of my stash in a climate controlled area. When I opened the tin there wasn’t any real aroma and the flakes were pretty dry. I bought the tin maybe a year ago so maybe it’s not that old.

Anyhoo, I loaded a bowl in a beat up cob I use outside for yard work and golf. The first third of bowl was hot air. Not pleasant. The rest of the bowl was mildly vanilla. But not really getting any rum or Lakeland sauce. My question is . . . Is that what the blend is supposed to taste like? My prior rum experience was Wilke where the rum topping hits you in the nostrils and in the smoke. The sauce has been noted to be less with all their blends but I still get some sauce love with Ennerdale. Maybe it’s my cob muting flavors. Maybe it’s too dry and lost it’s mojo. But not exactly what I was hoping for. I’ll try it next in a briar. But was curious from forum on what I’m experiencing

I was gifted a tin from the late 80s to early 90s. The tin was vacuumed sealed and the tobacco was in a sealed bag. When I opened it the tobacco was like a time capsule. It was moist and the aroma was probably the best smell coming from a pipe tobacco that I've ever smelled. I had some in a jar that I had got the previous year and it didn't compare to the tin! It was so tasty and the room note was "classic pipes". To this day I still keep a half pound of Rum Flake in my cellar. Of course it's the bulk version but it has never given me the same experience I had with that 30 plus year tin. My other favorite was Kendal Flake and Gawith discontinued it. I have since stocked up on Brown Flake scented and Coniston Cut Plug.

Why did Gawith stop making Kendal Flake? That was a masterpiece of a blend!

Blends are usually discontinued because they do not sell in big enough quantities to make it worthwhile producing them. Or on the odd occasion when a certain leaf variety can no longer be sourced.
