If you were going to use a latakia tobacco to make an aromatic crossover, I wouldn't suggest Star of the East. That has too many Orientals with sour notes. To me that is like adding chocolate syrup to buttermilk, blech. Maybe chose something with very little or no other Orientals but latakia.

Honestly though, other than the cute frogs on the tins, I never understood the attraction. It always had a smell or aroma of a candle that had just been blown out.

There were a few crossovers that I don't think are available any more that I thought were way better. Tewksberry had one called Nasferatu that was a licorice based latakia blend. Early on, I liked that one a bunch, till I just burned out on latakia altogether.

I've heard this from a few veteran members here and wonder when in the smoking journey this occurred? Also heard members talk of having periods of their lives where they were in specific genre phases. How long did that last for you and what was the genre?
Sound like a great topic for a thread of its own.

I'd suggest mixing Lane HGL with Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme. Start with 50/50 and pare the HGL back from there. While different then Frog, it is similar and affordable enough to experiment with a lot until you get it "just right."

I finally ran out of my Frog Morton. What would be a good substitute?

thanks!

Todd
Graciano's Frog Morton. It's a perfect replacement made by a Brazilian blender, some say it's better than the original.

Right now all 4 Frogs are in stock, this usually happens only once in a year or even less.

Hey guys. I know this thread is really old but I watched an old Muttonchop piper video last night. He was doing a review on JM Boswell Northwoods blend and says close to the end of the video that he wanted to mention that this blend is a close match for Frog Morton Cellar. I’m very new to the pipe smoking world but one thing I’ve heard alot about is Boswell Northwoods blend. Seems alot of people love it. So I’m thinking that maybe old Muttonchop might be in the minority on this otherwise I’d have heard others say this about Northwoods. Or maybe I just haven’t seen enough Northwoods reviews. Either way I figured I’d mention it here. I’ve been scrolling back into the archives here to try and educate myself and the timing was perfect. If I hadn’t watched the video just last night I probably wouldn’t have remembered it as I was reading this. I’ll try to post the link to the video too. He talks about his thoughts and it being a match at the 10 min 50 sec Mark.

This is what got me into Northwoods years ago (not this particular vid). I was looking for a FMC match and this came up from multiple sources, so I tried it.

It's close enough for me. I have 8 100g tins of FMC left, and usually a pound of NW on hand at any given time. Every other year, I'll pop a tin of FMC, smoke it and take the stave out and put it in with some NW and smoke that.

I keep the stave for two years and every once in a while I'll give it some Macallan to drink, let it dry and then pop it back in with the NW.

I figure that will keep me going for the next decade.

I have some Northwoods in a jar from 2 years ago. I smoked one bowl out of 2 ounces and nearly vomited because I was so disgusted. Send me $10 and you can have mine if you want it and you’re in CONUSA.

If Adam isn't interested, would you mind telling me how much it would cost to ship to Brazil? I'm very interested in trying Northwoods (hope we feel differently about it!)

It would be to the Federal District (Distrito Federal), in Brasília. If you need a Brazilian ZIP code to get a quote, it would be 70675-428.
