This may be a silly question, but 1. I know very little about knives 2. the local stores near me seem to be extremly overprice.
My hubby likes his plug tobaccos and I was thinking I would get him a nice pocket knife that he can use to slice it.
Anybody have any recommendations on any brands or online stores to pick one up?
Thanks in advance :) !!

You can't go wrong with CRKT knives, I think you can buy directly from their website, but I'm on my iPhone and I'm way to lazy to post a link.

Isn't he probably going to see this thread and spoil the surprise?
It's not really a surprise, he knows that he is getting it. Will he see this, maybe. But I know my hubby, he's off to bed and has an early AM job; I am hoping by time he logs in to the forum again this thread will have droped off the currently update threads.
I was thinking of a way off topic thread subject that he would have no interest in reading, but he told me that Kevin can be a turd, so I will just keep my fingers crossed :)!
And be lazy, my lil' fingers know how to type in the google search so I'll find the CRKT knives.
Thanks!

I have been a fan of Benchmade knives. They're pretty pricey but very well made, and I'm in love with their "axis" locking system. I own a few 940's a 705, a 960, a 771, and a 921(it's a disease I know).

i have a schrade. here's an interesting tidbit i found on a website:
"Imperial Schrade closed their doors July 30, 2004, after 100 years of business. We will not be able to restock our Schrade inventory as it sells out. There will be no more original Schrade knives produced, making the few Schrade knives we have left extremely collectable. If we can, we will buy these items on the secondary market when possible. Get a piece of Schrade history while you can. Please check the item description. Some of the Schrade Knives on this page are USA made; the import models are notated."
when i bought mine it was guaranteed for life, even if lost or stolen they'd replace it. think about that.

Opinel makes a very good pocket knife for a very good price. The above site has almost every brand you could want including CRKT, Benchmade, Cold Steel, etc. I prefer Cold Steel and Spyderco myself for a good folder. Why not a Swiss Army Knife? Victorinox Tinkerer would be a good all around choice for a plug knife.
The next model up, 4" I believe, of Opinels has a locking ring if that is important. Another option would be a Leatherman Kick. Inexpensive and a variety of tools he could use everyday. I carry a Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman every day.

Head over to your local Walmart and pick up a Gerber. A great knife for the price. I have a Chive that travels with me, I love the pocket clip.

Here's mine, but I don't have the Damascus steel version:

Any Gerber or Kershaw knifes are great and worth the money. They do sell their more popular models at Wal-mart and other retail stores. The one thing that is good about them is that if it is a popular seller they usually have the knife in several sizes, which make it easier to afford a good knife.
The knife in ssjones' pic is actually a Kershaw and a great knife.
In general I would say make sure it is a lock blade knife. Don't want the knife folding shut on your finger or anything else while trying to cut anything. Also, make sure there is no play in the pivot joint. If it seems lose when you are buying it, it will only get worse and probably isn't a very good knife. My personal preference is also to have a knife that is put together with screws instead of rivets. Makes it easier to clean and fix.

I will also say a good bet is the CRKT knife. I carried several (CRKT M16-14Z) on duty for many years, one on patrol and one in my tactical vest (in addition to the SOG Sealpup, fixed blade), and they all served me well. The company is also very good about supporting their product. I lost some screws once and they sent replacements, no charge. As also mentioned, consider SOG. I have a couple of them as well, and they are also a good knife.

I agree with sergmoat, Benchmade offers the best quality for the dollar. One of their Auto Strykers is my EDC. (Compare this Emerson knives, which are wonderful, but I'm not sure the quality is that much better than Benchmade, and they often cost much more.)
That said, I own several CRKT as well. They are considerably less expensive than Benchmade, with the concomitant decrease in quality, but it's that's not to say they are poorly made knives -- they are NOT. I'd say the ratio of quality to cost with CRKT and Benchmade is pretty consistent -- just a question of what your price point and perceived need is.
FWIW, I have carried this particular Auto Stryker for coming on six years. I have used it for everything from cutting steak at a cookout, to sharpening pencils, to cutting line, to opening boxes, to dressing small game, to -- well -- cutting plug tobacco. The finish is showing some wear at the clip and the corners. The blade remains perfect and still hones shaving sharp.
