Went to Wal*Mart for a few things, unfortunately with the upcoming hunting season it was slim pickings:

I don't personally know much about knives as they aren't my particular interest. But I know my friend would probably recommend spyderco, a few of their knives are quite pricey, but they sell 'byrd' knives which are much more reasonably prices. http://www.spyderco.com/
Those here who do have knowledge when it comes to knives, please feel free to publicly ridicule me if what I have said is completely useless :D

Nothing wrong with Spyderco at all. Another knife where the quality is very much in line with the cost, and so it's a good value in that sense.

Looks like a Gerber Paraframe. Nice little knife for the money. Would work for cutting plugs.

I like a good Case stockman and they are still made in the USA . I only have to sharpen about once a year and I use it as a tool not a finger nail cleaner .http://www.wrcase.com/index_en.php

All good suggestions. I have a Gerber Para, just like you posted and love it. I also have shrades, case, spyderco and even a Harley Davidson knife (I love it but it leaks oil in my pocket). One thing I am never without is my Swiss Army Knife, a Victorinox, to be specific. They are inexpensive, reliable, easy to sharpen and very low maintenance. I've used mine in places you would probably never believe.
I also have to mention the Swedish Mora blades. They are awesome if you want something in a sheath. I buy the naked blades for about $7 and make handles and sheaths for them out of pieces of wood I have laying around. Ben's Backwoods is a reliable place for those.

I'd recommend a good rigging knife. The marlinspike is good for untying knots and can also be used to remove dottle.

Spyderco is rather hard steel. I have several and they keep a good edge. Their economty line of knives is called "Byrd" and is also good steel. Then there is the old faithfuls.... Ka-Bar (USA made) and Ontario.

Puma, Schrade or Buck ... Schrade did some absolutely divine wee knives that will become valuable heirlooms.

Why I didn't think of this one I don't know. I have one sitting on my gun cabinet. Nice Wharcom blade for cutting plugs on a flat surface. Its really thin and fits in the pocket beautifully. You can get a custom G10 scale for it.

As requested, here's a shot of my Benchmade Auto Stryker, my EDC for five (not six as I said before) years. As I said, some wear on the finish on the clip and at the corners and that's it.

Here's a link to a much better pic at the company webpage:

Thanks all.
I did pick him up the Paraframe. He's a bit of a knife freak so I may look at getting him something a little fancier for Christmas.
Right now (as far as I know) he only has a Victorinox he picked up in Switzerland and a Kobalt kife that came as a set with the multi-tool.

Knives are something I know a little bit about, using one every day on the farm. So here's what I know: you can spend a lot of money on a knife. As much as you want. You can also get an outstanding knife fir about $10. Google Mora knife. High carbon steel with a single bevel that holds an edge far better than stainless and is easier to properly sharpen. You can get these knives sharp. I'm talking scary sharp. Wood carving sharp. Requires a little maintenance but nothing technical. A little cleaning after use, rub down with olive oil, and you're ok. I recommend olive oil over machine oil if it will be used to clean game or cut tobacco.

+1 on the Moras Sothron! Scroll back to the 1st page of this thread. I posted a pic of a Frosts Mora blade I did a scabbard and handle for.
