if anything I can see this as big tobacco moving onto e-cigs
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes and move smokers toward potentially less harmful e-cigarettes, in a major regulatory shift announced on Friday that sent tobacco stocks plunging.
Ill-conceived and misguided policy. The industry has been that route before:U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes...
Low-tar, low-nicotine cigarettes have been around for a long time. Smokers are now suing tobacco companies for marketing these cigarettes as relatively safe. The suit says that to get the same nicotine fix from low-nicotine cigarettes, smokers "unconsciously engage in compensatory behaviors " such as smoking more sticks, inhaling more deeply, or delaying exhalation. So nicotine reduction doesn't end up reducing the damage. And remember, these cigarettes are low-nicotine and low-tar. A low-nicotine, regular-tar cigarette would, on this theory, cause even greater damage, since you'd have to inhale more carcinogens to get the same fix.
A 2010 ruling from a federal court in a case filed by an e-cigarette manufacturer against the FDA determined that e-cigarettes which do not make therapeutic claims will be regulated as tobacco products.
If a manufacturer does make a therapeutic claim (such as that an e-cigarette can help you quit smoking), then the manufacturer must first prove through a series of clinical trials that their product is safe and effective.
Many e-cigarette companies market their product as a tool to help smokers quit. However, the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has not approved any e-cigarette as a safe or effective method to help smokers quit.
I'm confused....WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes and move smokers toward potentially less harmful e-cigarettes, in a major regulatory shift announced on Friday that sent tobacco stocks plunging
Even they won't stoop that low.The ACLU is very scumbag-centric; what's the threshold of scumminess to get those assholes on our side?
I agree. The deep state is going in for the kill, so that our only thrills will be ideological. This is significantly more damaging to the industry than any rules that had been previouosly proposed, they are potentially being regulated into oblivion.
pipesmokingtomIt's annoying that they consider anything "flavored" as kid-friendly.
Adults like flavors, too.
What about all of the carcinogens from the incineration of the tobacco? The carcinogens which are sucked into the body through the various tissues of the mouth and nose as they pass through. The nicotine is really only dangerous as it may/will cause addiction. Tars? Not so much for the pipe and cigar smoker.Although nicotine is addictive it's only inhaling the smoke that is bad, something most don't do with both pipes and cigars, so they are fine.
