At least solace can be found knowing that we did live in the golden age of pipe smoking for a while, never before were there so many blends available at ones fingertips. One can only imagine what it might be like in another 100 years, black market only?!

And people laughed about hoarding tobacco cellars for lifetime supplies. I don't think e-cigs will be affected as much as people think, if anything I can see this as big tobacco moving onto e-cigs. Even if it wasn't, most of the people I know who vape make their own juice. Tobacco without nicotine would probably suck

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes and move smokers toward potentially less harmful e-cigarettes, in a major regulatory shift announced on Friday that sent tobacco stocks plunging.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes...
Ill-conceived and misguided policy. The industry has been that route before:

Low-tar, low-nicotine cigarettes have been around for a long time. Smokers are now suing tobacco companies for marketing these cigarettes as relatively safe. The suit says that to get the same nicotine fix from low-nicotine cigarettes, smokers "unconsciously engage in compensatory behaviors " such as smoking more sticks, inhaling more deeply, or delaying exhalation. So nicotine reduction doesn't end up reducing the damage. And remember, these cigarettes are low-nicotine and low-tar. A low-nicotine, regular-tar cigarette would, on this theory, cause even greater damage, since you'd have to inhale more carcinogens to get the same fix.

A 2010 ruling from a federal court in a case filed by an e-cigarette manufacturer against the FDA determined that e-cigarettes which do not make therapeutic claims will be regulated as tobacco products.
If a manufacturer does make a therapeutic claim (such as that an e-cigarette can help you quit smoking), then the manufacturer must first prove through a series of clinical trials that their product is safe and effective.
Many e-cigarette companies market their product as a tool to help smokers quit. However, the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has not approved any e-cigarette as a safe or effective method to help smokers quit.

Uh-oh, Grandpa got busted with a corncob pipe full of Half and Half. A proud moment for law and order.

Despite the CRA, et al, litigation pending for this fall, FDA continues to voice its intent to wipe out tobacco.
Given this, my 150 pound cellar grows more attractive, and necessary. Given that cellar, it doesn't make much sense to buy more, yet if I may not be able to to buy more, I should buy more, now. . .right?

The anti-tobacco zealots have been trying to paint us as pariahs and scumbags for years now. The ACLU is very scumbag-centric; what's the threshold of scumminess to get those assholes on our side?

This is significantly more damaging to the industry than any rules that had been previouosly proposed, they are potentially being regulated into oblivion.
I agree. The deep state is going in for the kill, so that our only thrills will be ideological.

It's annoying that they consider anything "flavored" as kid-friendly.
Adults like flavors, too.

They regulated all "kid" sounding flavors of cigars here in Canada and I was worried for a while, but the cigar companies simply changed to more "mature" sounding names on the same products... I still smoke my honey backwoods, but they're ice wine now, instead of honey... no biggie!
The FDA website says nothing more then labeling nicotine as addictive, hope that is all they'll do, probably is!
Although nicotine is addictive it's only inhaling the smoke that is bad, something most don't do with both pipes and cigars, so they are fine.

elvishrunes - I honestly hope that this is really all a big show. Put labels on stuff, etc.
Meanwhile, I think I'll be hedging my bets by stocking up! :puffpipe:

What about all of the carcinogens from the incineration of the tobacco? The carcinogens which are sucked into the body through the various tissues of the mouth and nose as they pass through. The nicotine is really only dangerous as it may/will cause addiction. Tars? Not so much for the pipe and cigar smoker.
Know the risks and then enjoy your pipe, cigar or cigarette. I do and yet, I do.
