There are around 450 chemicals in cigarettes, including Ammonia. You have to ask why would you put ammonia in a cigarette? And why so many chemicals necessary?

I don't know but, I love 'em! How many chemicals are there in pipe blends? Love them too! And, the chemicals released when fire is put to tobacco? Well, you know the answer. I'm also a fan of ice cream, smoked pork, I add chemicals to most foods on my own, and really, REALLY love tryptophan. The more tasty chems the better I guess.

Good point, and good questions. Tobacco can be low or high quality, regardless of the form (cigarette, cigar, pipe). Most mass produced cigarettes should not really even be called tobacco IMO. A tobacco flavored product would be more accurate.
There are many good analogies in food. For example, there is non-toxic chicken meat from chickens that were humanely treated while alive.
And then there is chicken meat from these poor creatures (which is what most people are eating):
