I've ordered from a number of different sites and I've had no real problems with any of them. Usually I have an idea of what I want and then I simply price shop until I find the best deal.
That being said, I must say the smokingpipes website is outstanding. I'm a very detail oriented person, and when I'm ordering online I want to get the most information about the product since I can't really see it (well, I can see it obviously, but you know what I mean--not first hand), smell it, or touch it. Smokingpipes fulfills this need very well.
For pipes you get ALL of the specs plus VERY detailed photos of the pipes and some include videos.
Some of their tinned tobaccos and all of their bulk tobaccos include close-up photographs and all tobaccos include reviews. Tobaccoreviews is still the go-to for reviews, of course, but it is still a nice addition to their site.
When you click on a tobacco, SP cross references that tobacco with others. I tried Autumn Evening for the first time a few days ago and liked it a lot. SP tells me that those who order AE also tend to order Orlik's Golden Sliced (among others). I've heard about OGS here on the forum, but since I'm rather new to the briar I never would have put those two together. I definitely plan to purchase some in the future based on the info from SP and from the fine people here on this forum.
Finally, and not to reopen "The Thread That Shall Not Be Named," but Harris is right. Click on a tobacco, type "1000" on quantity, and click "Update Cart." Unless they have more than 1000 tins, SP will tell you how many they have on hand.
I can (and sometimes do) spend hours on the site reading about and looking at all of the various pipes and pipe tobacco they sell. It's a highly educational and informative site, and I most likely will be ordering from them once I return to the US simply because they do such a good job with their online presence. To me, it's the "gold standard" of what a website should be and do.
