What if some companies have been using it? And if the Lat blend you have been enjoying has it in it? Would that make any difference? I don't think it will make any difference to me.
Better yet, what if they did a blind taste test and the two are a little different and they consistently preferred the fake flavoring over the real thing, what then?

Wouldn't matter to me either, as long as it tasted good. I don't think it matters if it's "authentic" or "fake", whichever one tastes good. For me, it's about flavor, not being pompous about metaphysical "value" concepts like "authenticity" that don't actually mean anything outside the human animal's fragile psyche trying to deal with cognitive dissonance in justifying some made-up concept in a meaningless universe.

Ahhh, you are smoking too much Peterson’s Nightcap. It’s not as good as the Dunhill Nightcap. Ha ha puffy

Through mediums such as Social Media comments, and pipe community youtubers, I have been hearing/seeing rumors of "fake" Latakia being used in blends. I guess the thought is that cyprian latakia is becoming difficult to obtain and manufacturers are testing a sprayed on "liquid smoke" type flavoring to other types of leaf to mimic the taste of latakia. Can anyone tell me where this idea is coming from, and if it is legit?
Links? Never heard this.

For the record, I don't believe it. BUT...

“Burger King's BK Broiler Chicken Breast Patty contains 'natural smoke flavor.' A firm called Red Arrow Products Company specializes in smoke flavor, which is added to barbecue sauces and processed meats. Red Arrow manufactures natural smoke flavor by charring sawdust and capturing the aroma chemicals released into the air. The smoke is captured in water and then bottled, so that other companies can sell food which seems to have been cooked over a fire.”

From “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal," 2001.

I deduce it comes from folks like you, spreading it around.:sher:
I figure the idea came from somewhere, and was worth discussing! And what better place to discuss it? You can call that spreading it around if ya like

This thread from a few months ago by @woodsroad might interest you: Tobacco Flavoring for Smoking Products: Leffingwell, 1972 :: Pipe Tobacco Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/tobacco-flavoring-for-smoking-products-leffingwell-1972.99184/

According to list of products from 1972, Latakia flavoring (and perique flavoring!) have been around at least since then. We don't know how commonly they are actually used in tobacco, though.

On page 2 of that thread, a response to from Jeremy Reeves generously shared his perspective from inside the industry too.
Good info here, thank you!
