I've never heard this before. The only artificial smoke (liquid smoke) I'm aware of is used by food processors that want to give foods that smokey flavor, or bottles of liquid smoke to add to your recipes. To answer your question though, if my favorite English/Balkan blends used an artificial Latakia flavor I would have to try it before deciding to hate it or not.
