MSO pretty much has it correct. There are a number of entities who are interconnected and when you review the history since the 1970's it reads like a family tree composed from shotgun weddings. BAT owns the Dunhill tobacco blends and licenses them for manufacture. That's completely separate from the other Dunhill products. Dunhill handles the luxury goods. The pipes are something else again.

BAT will continue to make and distribute Dunhill cigarettes because there's money to be made that's not happening with the pipe blends. So BAT decided to get out of the pipe tobacco business.
If you want to see the detailed story of who owns what, here's the link to it:

"dunhill", lower case "dee" is the luxury goods brand, wholly owned by a Swiss firm. "Alfred Dunhill's White Spot" is pipes with a familial link to the originator of the pipes and blends. "Dunhill" tobacco products, blends, cigarettes and cigars are owned by BAT. All three marks are, as far as I can discern, separate entities with distinct, unconnected ownership.
So, new pipes with any connection to the Dunhill family are "White Spots" not, in truth "Dunhill." Or, at the very least "Alfred Dunhill White Spot." So the name "Dunhill" may be used to incorrectly, for selling purposes, to snare the unaware. This distinction will no doubt be blurred intentional and accidently over the years.

mso, I thought the pipes were going as well, glad to hear that isn't the case.
Since they are no longer made in England, and are called The White Spot, are they actually Dunhill pipes anymore?
Edit-Warren covered that one. So in truth, once the production was moved and renamed, other than estate pieces, Dunhill as pipes and pipe tobacco is no more.

@Duane.

I was just goofing. My posts seem to be thread killers lately. I was just testing my theory.
I already have my BB1938 all stocked up.

I for one will be sad to see Dunhill's blends go as we're not blessed with the variety you guys get on your side of the pond. Whilst Dunhill might not make your favourite blend they did make solid good smokes and where easy to find when traveling though Europe and that's what I think I'll miss most.

What always irked me when visiting a B&M was that any tin with a Dunghill label on it was priced at least £1 more than all other brands of equal weight.

I don't mind admiring Dunhill blends, in retrospect now. They were/are a good introduction to premium brands, with distinct taste profiles for each blend, and notable consistency (for the most part) over the years, given that tobacco is a crop subject to variations and conditions. I just don't want to disrespect the many brands and blenders that work steadfastly into the future facing regulatory and economic obstacles. These people do a remarkable job and sustain a golden age of pipe tobacco blending such as the world has never seen. Everyone learned from the Dunhill line, but many fine brands continue to delight us with their creativity, craftsmanship, productivity and distribution. Let's celebrate the folks who carry on!

OT: @dave g, there was a post some years ago about this very subject, with many, myself included, testing whose post would kill it. Don't know how it ended.

mso489, I agree, although I'll miss Dunhill, there are so many fantastic amazing blends out today!

LoL, It seemed like was the only guy who liked the Orlik better than the Murray Dunhill mixtures when everyone on the pipe boards were bitching and moaning about the horrible sacrilege that Orlik was calling Dunhill. Anyway, I was told privately last year and it was said publicly this year by a STG rep at a pipe show that when the warehouse empties Orlik will continue the same mixtures under new names. 8O

Dunhill was my gateway to English blends, I liked M965 a lot and Nightcap was a little less exciting for me. Then I found other blends which were more interesting/better fitted to my tastes.

foursidedtriangle, that was much the same way for me as well, except with Nightcap. That was the first real tin of tobacco I bought, and I was hooked. I have about 4 or 5 tins squirrelled away. But your tastes change and you find others that are good too.

@daveinlax ... I expected the blend recipe to be sold off, or the above rebranding. The nice thing is, whenever the next incarnation comes around, my cellared dunhill blends will have some age on them, and I can opine how the newly released version does not have the depth of Murray’s or Orlik’s

I did pick up a sleeve of Ye Olde Sign. It's one of those blends that I have wanted to try. My guess it that it won't be touched for a long time and I'm hoping that it ages some.

Yeah, I've heard that as well, assuming BAT agrees to let them use their mixtures. Won't matter in the US unless the FDA deeming regs change as they won't be able to sell them here without going thru the deeming process.
