I would imagine that 1Q is "controversial" because of it's reputation and longevity. Most have tried it, know of it or have taken the hipster approach that it is "too popular" and it is to be looked down upon. Not that they aren't all that wrong, but it is one of those starter bulk blends that I would imagine many have began on or have had themselves at some point.
I kept seeing that it was "the most popular blend in North America" and how others recommended it. I'll take a strong or frequent recommendation at least once. Where there's smoke there's is fire. Amirite?!

Yes I don't like 1Q. And yes we have no bananas.
Speaking of bananas, why is there no banana flavored aro? Not that I'd smoke it as I don't care for aro's, but seeing that they have, cherry, apple, peaches, etc. Well... ya get the idea.

Too mild and I have smoked one too many bad Vanilla flavored blends to the point I find it despicable in other things as well ( vanilla cookies, vanilla ice cream etc ).

Interesting time for this to come up. I recently was given a decent size sample of 1Q from a generous friend (you know who you are) and decided to try it out just for the hell of it.
I've always steered away from those bulk aros being the Lat lover that I am. They never appealed to me as something to bother wasting time and money on. In this case though, I was just in the mood for something different and curiosity got the best of me. So I filled up a cob of 1Q and found myself still puffing away on it 2 days and 4 bowls later.
Is it kinda bland? Yes. But for a basic pipe tobacco, the stuff really isn't that bad at all. It packs easy, has a light sweetness, and burns without any effort at all... not to mention the aroma which is probably the blend's best quality. I'm no stranger to relights when smoking my pipes and I was surprised that only one bowl of this required a relight at all for me. In all honesty I can see why this is one of the #1 selling blends out there. Sure it's not well suited for serious pipers who love the more robust and complex blends but it certainly has it's place.
I won't praise 1Q as being the best ever. It is what it is and I can certainly see why it has the reputation that it does. But when I need something easy to smoke that is a light and refreshing change of pace, I see myself returning to it from time to time.

Banana cased tobacco? That would be..??? Well?? Bananas.
And as for something mild to smoke to break from the fuller tasting tobacco, I just stuff a bowl of Carter Hall or Prince Albert.

I recently got a sample of it....tried it out...wasnt too bad.
Then mixed it with some carter hall, and it was quite nice. I figured that I have about 6OZ of Carter Hall kickin around for over a year nopw in a jar, so I bought 8OZ of 1Q and just threw it in with it....
I'll smoke it once or twice a week to switch it up. Ladies do love it, also popular with a couple of new pipe smokers ive converted to our side.
Leaves a nice sweetish flavour in my mouth, no bite like a Peterson Arro would do, and it doesnt ghost my pipes.

When I first picked up pipe smoking about ten years ago my local b &m sold me a basket pipe and a couple oz of this. The person who worked there told me about ghosting and told me not to mix tobaccos in my pipes. They said mostly what people smoked was iq so I stuck with it and never tried any other tobaccos. Until a year and a half ago when I found this site and decided to try other tobaccos. My first two were Irish flake and Balkan sobranie. Since then I have smoked1q a few times but I never really enjoyed it.
