I honestly don't like second hand pipes that have hundreds or thousands of smokes. I would accept pipes with a few smokes. But I would not refuse a gift of a used pipe, because it is a gift. I mean, I don't turn down a used gift. As long as it's not underwear. But I like to buy and brand new things.

I'm not sure if I have a preference. I do love getting new pipes, it is simply exciting to me. However, I have bought more estate pipes than new pipes, mainly due to the price. Hard to go wrong when you can sometimes get lucky and buy 5 pipes for $90 or so.

However, I have had a few that were beyond my amateur skills to restore. They weren't high end pipes, so it didn't pay to get all fixed up fancy (I'm relatively poor). I end up flipping those for whatever I can get for them. Something about chewed up stems and old, thick cake turns me off more than I care to admit.

No particular preference between new and estate for me. I’m pretty picky. I don’t buy many pipes so if I find one that I really like the look/make of i’ll buy it used if is in acceptable condition. One of my “nicest” pipes is an estate. It had been properly cleaned and prepped and smoking it didn’t seem any different than smoking a brand new pipe. But that pipe would have likely cost more than twice what I payed for it if it had been new. So in some sense I’d prefer estates to save some cash. That being said, I’ve bought more new pipes than used.

I have about 2 dozen pipes all estate. Most British in origin. I search out pipes by certain favorable criteria for how I enjoy my smokes starting with length. I prefer longer stem, medium size bowl, and lower weight. No filters. Stingers are usually a deal breaker. I just find it easier to narrow down what I like in the estate market among factory pipes with a history of decent quality. Occasionally you strike out but It's exciting when you get a vintage that exceeds expectations. I suppose it's the character of older pipes that I find more appealing.

Eateries normally are inspected and held to certain standards. Pipes? Not so as one would notice. So, some people, not knowing what communicable disease the previous smoker may have died of, simply prefer to be cautious. But, smoking is for the risk takers so. many smokers simply choose to ignore such or, trust in their or others abilities to fully exorcise what ever demons might reside in a used pipe. People's health concerns shouldn't be trivialized.
Of course you should clean and sterilize a pre-owned pipe before smoking it. On the other hand, there are just a few rare diseases that could live on or in a pipe for more that a few hours. Luckily we're unlikely to encounter them. puffy

The majority of my pipes are estate pipes because of my collecting interests. Every once in a while I'll find an unsmoked pipe that fits within what I collect. Most of the pipes that I purchased new are commissioned pipes, Castello pipes that I purchased from Bob Hamlin in the late 90s, or my beater pipes that I'm ok taking outside of the house.

I like either, but I don't want to spent to of time on restoring ,so when it comes to estate market I prefer to have those refurbished -restored ones, which doesn't not always mean these do not need any additions touch up,in 80% of cases with estate pipes theres always something that could have been done better)another thing with brand new ones is manufactures are hardly producing straight billiard shapes in strict accordance with the 50-60 models as seen here, s-l500.jpg
