I'm talking about the goopy ones, not the more tobacco forward aromatics from Gawith, or the codger blends.

I've stuck back many jars of a few different blends like this... You know the kind of wet, goopy, aromatics... The kind that couldn't satisfy the nicotine cravings of a 4th grader.

Hell, you might be better off socking back bags of Bouy Gold, like our lawyer does.

Flavor is important obviously, but tobacco gets it's value from nicotine. If not, we'd be smoking lettuce or something.

I was thinking:

• Are aromatics completely useless?

• Do aromatics suck?

Are aromatics completely useless?
In my cellar today, yes. But IMO they have their place. Many folks love them, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so they say. I started off with CB and it took years for me to make the transition. If someone enjoys them it's their choice but today the heavy syrup tobaccos like CB or 1Q I do not care for.

Some do, some don’t. Just like non-aros. I hear great things about the aromatics from Boswells, and given my superb experience with their English blends that use vanilla black cavendish, I would give them a try. Same positive things are said about Peretti, though I have yet to try any of their blends to verify for myself.

There are a few Sutliff aros that I have around as blenders but rarely smoke on their own. Their Maple Walnut is wonderful mixed with Country Squire Cowboy Coffee or Early Morning Pipe, it tastes literally like breakfast with pancakes and bacon.

If you dismiss the entire category because there are a bunch of clunkers, you’ll miss out on some true gems.

I have some goopy aros that I smoked when I first started out - I get no real enjoyment from them anymore. 1Q, Sutliff Vanilla Custard, Sutliff Black Cordial, CAO Cherry Bomb, Cult BRM - these just take up space at this point.

I do like the codger aros, or at least Amphora Full Aroma, when the mood strikes me.

Four months into my return to pipe smoking and have tried many so called aromatics, naively believing the blurb. Perhaps there's a difference between the UK and US aromatics but all except GH American Delite and Black & Brown have been disappointing. Hardly any pouch note is evident in the taste. They taste of very little and burn hot and fast. Have not tried Lakelands - yet. Very reluctant to try any more. Maybe OK as spouse pacifiers, otherwise they suck! There are too many non-aromatics to try so won't shed any tears.

No, aromatics don't suck. But some do.

Aromatics aren't useless, in that, you can get some nicotine out of smoking them (says the guy who adds perique to Autumn Evenings just to give it some umpf). They're a nice treat.
That is a good ideal to add perique to Autumn Evening. I bought 4 tins last year when I restarted my pipe smoking journey. That might make a difference.

Here we go, another "I hate aromatics" thread.

It's simple, smoke what you like. If you don't like aromatics, don't buy them. If you have aromatic blends you don't like, trade them or give them to someone who is interested.

Do ALL aromatics suck. No, but like Pipke said, some do. (But even that is a matter of opinion.) I have personally found that I enjoy aromatics that are mainly made for the European market - like HU, Michael Apitz and blends made by Kopp (formerly known as Kohlhase & Kopp). I don't find the ones I've smoked to be as heavily cased or topped as US made blends.

By the same token, I have found a number of non-aromatics that I don't like. I'm not a big fan of predominately Burley based blends. I have also found that I don't really like ropes or twist tobacco.

Hey, every genre gets its turn on the pedestal of shame. The dumpster fire latakia joke thread will start shortly in a few hours. Then, its granny panty Lakelands up on the block. Then, I can't taste anything from Virginias up after that. Just enjoy the show, It's camaraderie. puffy
No one actually thinks less of an aromatic smoker. Unless of course they set too close to me while I'm smoking. But, I always move without insulting anyone.

The one thing about aromatics that may be a negative is how they smoke after you get halfway down the bowl.

Most seem to loose their aromaticity. Without the aromatics, is the blend good enough to take it down to the dottle? Or does the resulting smoke kind of get a little bitter, or nasty? The perception is going to be dependent on individual tastes. For me Autumn Evening gets a little unappealing 3/4 down in the bowl. Adding a bit of perique helps it along to the dottle, plus gives it a kick. Sillems Black kind of looses it as you smoke it down too. But Visions of Celephais is good to me for the whole bowl after the grapieness dissipates. What I'm trying to describe here may be one factor in how an aromatic may suck.
