To me the fun part about pipe smoking is having so much variety to choose from, its what keeps me interested in it. I wouldn't enjoy smoking the same blend every time like the old timers did.

As my stash grows I tend not to think of specific blends, but of genres that I want to have at hand:

  • a Balkan (oriental-forward Lat, not decided on any specific one yet)
  • a VaPer (can be any of the tens of great VaPers that exist)
  • a Lakeland (after trying 1792 I decided I won't ever bother finding another, although it's not a pure Lakeland, and Conniston Cut Plug is nearly as good for me)
  • a flavoured (no specific blend needs, just something with an additive, MacBaren Vanilla cut with Amphora burley does it for me)
  • Gawith ropes (yes, class of their own for me)
  • something with Dark Fired Kentucky (MacBaren ODF has blown me away, would be happy never to look for something else with DFK)
Actually this mental exercise was very useful to help me plan my cellar and arrange my pipes, especially now that I found great enjoyment playing with hobby blocks.
Please check out their bold Kentucky before you decide on Old Dark Fired. Since you like 1792 you’ll likely enjoy Bold Kentucky much more than ODF like I did.

Starting to Get Obsessed

I spent years buying a tin or pouch and not buying another until the first was finished. Then when I had to start ordering online and it only made sense to buy several tins, that is when the cellar started. And in fact a lot of times I'll smoke mainly one type of tobacco pretty obsessively until the tin is gone. As in at least one bowl will be from that tin.
I attended a small school in SW Missouri, in a very small town. We had one Recall store and I too bought one tin at a time. We pretty much smoked what was available at the store. Occasionally they would get a few tins in - a MacBarens, a Nightcap, an EMP. This was all I knew in those days. I remember having a big can of Carter Hall, and there were a few others. How times have changed!

Since I'm a bit of an infrequent when I get the time or the itch to smoke a bowl type, I have this feeling these days of cutting back. Like, to 2 or 3 blends if that. I've got too many, way too many blends stashed away. I've got tins of blends I haven't tried yet and I have jars of baccy I don't know when I'll ever get to again. Tell me, has anyone just said to hell with it, I'm sticking only to one blend (or two or three) at a time. LOL, can it even be done?
Nah. Cut back on ordering, sure. But, as they say, smoke 'em if you got 'em! 'Em being various blends of course.

I'm still in the discovery phase of piping, so even though I probably have accumulated 60 or so blends, and cellared a couple of dozen, there are another 15-20 on my "try" list. I'm sure this will settle eventually, but in the meantime what constitutes an "essential" blend seems to shift every couple of weeks. If I were to draw up such a list now it would probably be:
PS Luxury Navy Flake
C and D XX Flake
C and D Billy Budd
Gawith Bosun Cut Plug
Gawith Dark Bird's Eye
SPC Plum Pudding SR
