Good move. I expect you're knee deep in Smoker's Pride, Prince Albert Cherry Vanilla and Velvet. Anything else?

Haha My "cellar" is pretty pathetic.. but its better than that.

Mine is more of an emergency stockpile. I always figured that if some kind of shit hit the fan, it would sure suck to be wishing I had some tobacco. That's incase of a personal or a national emergency. Just a mail order ban would put me 3 hours away from any tobacco I'd want. I also suspect it would put quite a few brands out of business, which would limit me even more.

I will never be able to afford to try the shit ton of blends available.. I'm looking for the best of the good enough. Some people have enough tobacco to last a lifetime. I could be smoking for the next 70 years, plus I smoke a lot.. I don't have enough time, at the rate I buy, to have a wide selection before the door closes.

It's doable, but with today's variety it just makes sense to try as much as you can. 50 years ago there were not nearly as many blends as there are now. We live in a time where variety is the spice of life. I love Prince Albert, but I don't want it to be one of the only blends I have to smoke. I've got about 100+ blends. Some multiple tins and some only one. I've narrowed down list of blends I will cellar deeply to about 15, which I think is a generous amount considering what is out there.

Another thing is that I have multiple tins of blends that I rarely smoke. Case in point is Peterson 3P's. It's taken me almost 2 years to even get to the halfway mark on a plug. I have five tins in my cellar. One tin should, based on my math, last me about 4 years. So, at my rate I have 20 years worth of 3P's. On the other hand, I smoked through a 2oz cake of Briar Fox in about two weeks, and that was smoking once a day.

I have quite a few blends on hand. My problem is that on occasion I get too deep in the bottle and stay up too late shopping pipe and tobacco sites. A week or so later a parcel arrives and I'm surprised by the contents which I haven't the slightest memory of ordering. Like Christmas morning! But as you say, it's better to have a half dozen of so favorites and stick to them.

I mostly smoke the same blend all over, but it puts my mind at ease to have a cellar with a broad variety.

You never know how long we will be able to choose from such a wide selection of pipe tobaccos.
When the day comes, I do not want to be left with just the one blend I usually smoke.

My problem is that my PAD is far stronger than my TAD. I start to get the feeling it should be the other way around with all the changes in legislation and the generally uncertain future of pipe tobacco. Now every time I see a new pipe I try to remind myself to stock up my cellar instead. I do not want to have to resort to smoking cigarette tobacco in my pipes one day.

As my stash grows I tend not to think of specific blends, but of genres that I want to have at hand:

  • a Balkan (oriental-forward Lat, not decided on any specific one yet)
  • a VaPer (can be any of the tens of great VaPers that exist)
  • a Lakeland (after trying 1792 I decided I won't ever bother finding another, although it's not a pure Lakeland, and Conniston Cut Plug is nearly as good for me)
  • a flavoured (no specific blend needs, just something with an additive, MacBaren Vanilla cut with Amphora burley does it for me)
  • Gawith ropes (yes, class of their own for me)
  • something with Dark Fired Kentucky (MacBaren ODF has blown me away, would be happy never to look for something else with DFK)
Actually this mental exercise was very useful to help me plan my cellar and arrange my pipes, especially now that I found great enjoyment playing with hobby blocks.

i have increased my smoking to 6 bowls per day and have been enjoying everyone. I am smoking nothing but aged flakes right now and no more for a rainy day. I am going to smoke what I want when I want and the hell with holding back.
It's like the hard working older folk that work like dogs their whole life, amassing a nice bank account but too frugal and cheap to spend a dime. Then their lazy useless children inherit it all when they die and spend it in a week

I understand where you are coming from, and I can do with 2 or 3 blends. But on occasions, I still find something nice. So I'm keeping trying new blends.

I like to try different blends, but I only smoke English and Balkans. So, variety with a theme. I do tend to always go back to my favorites though. I just bought 2 pounds each of Billy Budd and Tuggle Hall.
