Conventional Wisdom

Frequently while perusing threads old and new on pipe boards, I come across the equivalents of:

"Enjoying watching the sun come up as it orbits the earth"

"Had been feeling kind of off, but the barber came by and gave me a good blood-letting and I'm doing ever so much better"

I flinch a bit, but never reply so as not to rain on anyone's parade; part of the fun of a trivial pursuit is to be able to believe and express any damn thing you like with no harm done.

Curious about how others who encounter conventional wisdom that ranges from questionable to absurd and that's been passed around endlessly for so long it's become dogma deal with it - do you let it slide or weigh in?

As far as "conventional wisdom" from platitudes, it really depends on what kind of mood I'm in. I might let it slide or I might ask how many baskets I'll need for my eggs.

Not quite on topic, but it does relate. My wife has been a cardiac nurse for 12 years. Her parents get medical advice from the local vet. They have some hilarious conversations.

I'm tempted to be funny but I think it's best to take it all into account. It's all based on someone's experience, and they were there first. Most of the time and perhaps unfortunately, you have to be your own authority. Adulthood seems like it might be the pursuit of parsing bullshit from clover. Prepare to wash your hands.

"Time goes faster as you get older."
No, it does not.

"Follow your heart."
This is probably the worst advice the world perpetually gives.

I treat platitudes as background noise. People use them to fill the voids in life becase they are uncomfortable with silence and contemplation ... most pipers are quite familiar, and comfortable, with both.

I have no Wisdom, been trying to kill myself by pipe smoking for well over 50 years and here I am, fit and healthy, so I must be a bit thick with absolutely no wisdom, but happy with it.

I would just assume it's been that long since bleeding out as a health remedy, or an Earth centric view of the solar system was considered 'conventional wisdom'.

Time is a great mystery...and IMO there is definitely some aspect of it that involves a function of consciousness.

I will admit "Follow your heart" resulted a very rewarding/successful career and a 36 year marriage full of magnificent peaks and very few valleys. But, one needs to marry "do the work" with "follow your heart". One doesn't work without the other.

Definitely the former. I used to weigh in, but there's just too damn many instances anymore to bother, and more and more as time progresses, I guarantee it. Weighing in not only does nothing to prevent deceptions from becoming common knowledge and accepted as fact, but it also does nothing to help snap the indoctrinated out of their own self-induced stupor. Who even has the energy anymore?

Pipe smoking effectively removes any trace of this predicament from my conscious mind, and for that, I am most thankful.
