The other day someone posted about delayed gratification.
During this conversation I brought up the weirdos that like to DG a cigar. I said I didn't really care for DGing a pipe, but cigars were FAR worse.
Weeeeell, this brings us to yesterday.
We had my wifes good friend and her husband staying at our home for a few days. They are from Florida so we don't see them much....we are in WNY.
They have one of those tents that mount to the roof of their truck, so they stayed in it....with their FOUR dogs. :)
Anyways, yesterday I cooked some ribeyes from our cattle, grilled some corn and had a great meal.
After the food I decided to have a cigar. For those that don't know, I used to be heavily into cigars before I started piping.
I quit everything for about 7 years, so my already 8 year old cigars had another 7 years rest in the humidors.
I still smoke the occasional cigar, but not too often. I'm just a freak that babysits a humidor for 15 years, only smoking maybe 6 a year.
So, the husband says he really likes an occasional cigar. Great, let's have a cigar.
He chooses a beautiful Torpedo shaped Fuente Anjeo...dark and oily....15+ years of age on it.
I chose a Padron Anniversary, also oily and beautiful.
We light up, puff for a few minutes, about 5 minutes ...and I go in the house for a second.
I come out and find the Fuente snubbed out in the ashtray. I asked if there was an issue eith the cigar. Dude says, "yeah, that's not my cup of tea".
Ok, I said......"that's unfortunate".
He says, "I really like the Backwoods cigars."
A 15 year old Fuente Anjeo, oily and perfect....snubbed in the ashtray after puffing a quarter inch.
I realize these Fuente aren't the BEST cigars, but he was aware that ive been painstakingly taking care of them for 15+ years!
And no, I will NOT DG it.
It had its band stripped off and pinned to the wall of my garage. The cigar is in the trash.
I have 2 of those Anjeos left....and NOBODY is getting one. :)

I quit wasting nice, high end Cigars on people that aren't cigar smokers. They don't have the palette to appreciate them and most often, they have a better chance to get some enjoyment out of a cheap, mild cigar.
He said he LOVED cigars!
It was only later I learned he liked Backwoods cigars.
I informed him these were fine handmade PREMIUM cigars.
Oh well, im already over it.
My thing was that even if the cigar wasn't "my cup of tea", I would choke down at least 1/2. Especially after learning how prized these cigars are to people......like me.
Some people just don't have much class I guess. :)

It was just some rolled up leaves to that guy.

I hate when people give me a glass if scotch, I'll be trying to pour that awful shit down the sink when they turn their backs.

I was with a boss of mine years ago when this happened... The guy turned around right when I was pouring it out. Pretty akward moment.

I aint getting drunk at lunch on some nasty scotch though. I don't care how peaty and smoky it is.

Those whiskey guys just can't take no for an answer... They think they'll convince you to love that swill by saying words about it.

I had a similar thing happen to me when I went up to Omaha. I guy came into the shop I was visiting and started asking about the cigar selection. I lost my mind and offered him several years old Monte #2. After 5 minutes he put the cigar in the ashtray and said goodbye. He smoked next to nothing of an exquisite cigar.

Bummer! Next time someone is around do a little research and ask what kind of cigars they like. You will quickly find out if they have a clue what they are smoking. If they like rolled cardboard you can reach for the worst you have and make them happy. Again, Bummer!

I also agree that the individual has some pretty poor manners. Smile and smoke it.

I have had some similar episodes, with a good wine, whisky, and Havana cigars, cigars that I will no longer be able to smoke for the rest of my life, because they no longer exist in Spain. It seems to me a lack of respect, what that guy did, with your cigar. But I always say the same thing, there is nothing more stressful and destructive than chatting with a complete fool. Next time, offer him a fresh dog shit, rolled up in toilet paper.

I would have cut both ends off that and saved it without causing a scene. But only for a Fuente ... I don't like other non-Dominican cigars and say Thank you profusely but tell the offeror not to waste it on me.

It’s always a friend that “loves” cigars that really has no idea what you’re letting them smoke. Nothing wrong with liking backwoods, but there is something wrong with liking backwoods and not quickly realizing how much better a premium handmade is. And then to just waste it. I would do my best not to waste even the worst cigar in front of the person that gave it to me.

I wonder if the guest was informed of the investment made in the cigar prior to lighting it? Elitist smokers made me sick of cigars some time ago and I tossed the remainder of my collection. Imagine turning noses up over other's preferences.
