I’m down with clay for a smoke every now and again but probably not for a whole day, lol.

Got one Old German that’s quite decent, an absurdly long old churchwarden from the place (forget the name) that supposedly specializes in making reproductions (it doesn’t smoke particularly well) and a double walled porcelain thing that smokes very nicely. So, yeah, I could meet the challenge, but honestly my briars are way more interesting and my half dozen meers would get jealous. 😉

Some nitpicking on clay and sepiolite. From the geological point of view Clay and sepiolite are not to be equated with each other. They are totally different in respect to their properties.

Clay is a unique combination of the clay minerals kaolin, illite, chlorite, sepiolite, and smectite. It’s a heterogeneous mixture of those elements. It needs to be burned at high temperature to keep the hardness and shape like clay pipes, pottery… do.

And clays are much cheaper, I like mine,

Sepiolite is a mineral with a characteristic needle shaped crystal structure. “It is a rare mineral with the chemical composition Mg8[(OH)2| Si6O15]2· (4+8) H2O and thus chemically a water-containing magnesium silicate with additional hydroxide ions. According to its crystal structure, it belongs to the phyllosilicates.”
Where does one acquire such a fine smooth clay?

@Ahi Ka Nice pipe; it looks like it's a bit bigger than my Jamestown clay but smaller than my Pollock. Got the twist for my half in the 'smoke-off' today. If I slice my 25g rope into 25 equal sized slices that should give me a rough estimate; now all I need is somewhere out of the wind to get down to business! Ideally looking for a country pub with a smoking shelter or the 'old favourite' location of Cromford Mill churchyard once the wind has died down!
Should I use the Jamestown or one of my Pollock pipes???

You’re a true red coat bro. Smoking your clay to the end.

Also. You probably like smoking your clays more than me, and that’s something I admire and one reason I thought it would be fun to do a smoke off
@Ahi Ka Bought a 25g pouch of GH Black Irish X twist for the big clay pipe smoke-off. Now to find somewhere out of the wind - as this can make it hard to light and affect smoking times. No big clouds of clay pipe smoke though; this burns your baccy too fast and again affects smoking times. Smoke the twist too fast and I'd probably pass out!
