Finally looked into going and got some sticker shock by the room price. Clearly I'm very jaded by local Las Vegas casino room rates lol. Maybe one of these years I'll just bite my lip on the room price and head out for the Chicago show.
There will be pipes ranging from dollars to thousands of dollars. Artisan pipe prices are usually set and sometimes drop on Sunday if the maker is trying to sell what he/she brought and didn't sell on Friday or Saturday. Estate pipe prices can sometimes be negotiated depending on the vendor.Fair prices meaning, the pipes available at the show, range from what?
A little bit of everything from pipe making supplies, to racks, accessories, and of course pipes and tobacco. What can I expect to find?
There will be more pipes in one place than you've ever seen before. Friday's swap/sell is a less formal more crowded event because it's in the tent. It's nice because it's intimate and you can smoke your pipe as you look at pipes. The show itself is well-organized with plenty of space to walk around. People start lining up to get into the show around 9:45, you buy a ticket, and then go into the show. They do a good job of keeping the opening of the show from being a frenzy atmosphere. Is there a good amount of pipes available. Is the event a feeding frenzy?
The Mega Center is a large arena-like setting, and I'm not sure of the exact number of vendors, but it's hundreds. Is it a large selling arena? Any idea on the number of vendors?
Iwan Ries is one of the primary tobacco vendors, but there are other vendors as well, from blenders, to smaller companies, and individuals. I do not remember seeing a lot, if any, bulk tobacco being sold. The prices are equitable to the internet, but there are deals to be had and hard to find/rarer tins here and there among the various vendors. As for Tobbaco Vendors, are quantities of factory blends available? Again, is pricing equatable to the Internet?
Cash is king. I'm almost positive that there is an ATM? Some vendors do accept cards, but again, cash is king.I'm sure cash is best, but do some take credit cards? ATM available?
