Cheap Cigar Tobacco in a Tiny Pipe?

Hello all, new here and I live that life in South America.

This thread might not suit purists but it could give the technical members something to suck on.

Basically have been buying cheap, proper cheap, cigars. Recently took to shredding them and filling a pipe...... poor old man has to eat and make fruit wines too.

The last bag of 50 puros I brought are a bit new and moist and not burning well. Also leaving strong stale smell..
(Think garden tabaco leaves expertly jammed together into the shape of a 5 inch cigar, amd sold at 13 US cents each)

The pipe is a small wooden bowel and stick straw design (common here as used wih other substances) and dirties with thick black residue very quickly.

Can't send fotos as I have no camera, sorry.


Should I dry the tobaco and how?
Best way shred and pack it?
Clean after every use?

But as in the title, if you could just let me know how you would optimise and make a semi decent smoke, with these primitive materials, you might improve the life of a poor old man.


Others can help with the tobacco, but I'd like to know more of your story. You English or US born?

Break apart the cigars and let them sit out until they are almost crispy. Experiment with different packing styles as all pipes have different draws. I would clean it every so often. You can just blow any excess moisture back out into the bowl of the pipe and wipe that out if you don't have any pipe cleaners.

Try making cavendish with some of the cigars and then blending it with the others.

Can you import whole leaf tobacco to where you live?

Also, if you are drinking Yerba, I’ve found that tobacco tastes like crap after this. It might just be me though

At the local cigar (and pipe) shop here in town there are a couple of veterans who apparently picked up a habit during the Vietnam war that they still have today.

They smoke cigars out of pipes. I’m not sure why, I don’t know the guys to ask them why they do what they do, I just know that they do it. They just cut the cigars into halves or thirds or whatever works and stuff them into the pipe and light the cigar and smoke it.

They don’t break it up at all, just smoke it as a cigar inside a pipe. It seems to work for them. Perhaps it could work for you also.

Maybe just dice up the cigars and let it dry out a bit. Pack light and experiment. I know its possible because I think C&D sells the chopped cigar leaf.

looked up cavendish. Looks involved but there is plenty of sugar and rum here so maybe...... less involved than the fruit chica i make, which go well with the cheap cigars.

isn't tobacco great. Even a poor old man can find some luxury with it.
Yes the dry the tobacco just shred to desired consistency and leave it out till you're happy with the results.
And whatever your methods at the end of the day the question is does it give you comfort and pleasure, if the answer is yes you're doing it right.
Oh by the way Wodehouse claims to have regularly smoked cigars in a pipe.
Side note. Poor old men can sometimes not only have interesting stories, but a hell of a way of telling them. Might be able to get some spending cash selling stories. You have an internet so if you think it's worth trying look up places that will pay you for such things. Also might be interesting to hear for the rest of us.

My stories are ok but there is a lot of competion what with the internet. maybe i could swap pipe help for simple homebrew hints. I was ridiculed or ignored on the homebrew forums for my simple techniques

Where about are you in South America? If you are smoking those green cigars they sell in Costa Rica then you need to slice them into coins and then pack your pipe.

I didn’t explain that very well. I have never met the guys. I don’t frequent the place, and one of the employees there told me about it. I don’t fully remember, but I think it was something about not being able to get pipe tobacco where they were. I think it just became their habit after that.

My actual point was that you didn’t necessarily have to break up the tobacco to smoke it in a pipe. I guess I didn’t really have to share the story part of it, but I did anyway because I can’t help myself.

I dont know where you are but Id scour junk and cheap antique stores or flea markets. You need a proper pipe. Cheap or old is fine. Even in France where things are overpriced you can get old no name pipes for under ten bucks. Ive got abfriend in belgium who oicked up a couple for 6 euro each. Clean it up, sanitize and then work with your tobacco. Without a real pipe it’s really a hard sell. A drug pipe isnt likely to help your experience.
