Every tin I have ever bought is vacuum sealed. That's why they they make that air rushing noise when you open them.
Vacuum sealing a tin will deprive the aerobic bacteria of the oxygen necessary for proper aging. But if you're interested in faithful preservation, not aging, then I guess a vacuum would not cause a problem.

Mac Baren creates a 40% vacuum in their tins (60% of atmospheric pressure), so that's why you hear and feel the pop. I can't imagine why they chose that percentage figure.

I have many times experienced a better flavor (ageing) of a tin AFTER I have opened it and let it sit awhile, thereby letting oxygen interact with the tobacco. I have noticed that some blenders even note that their tins are "lightly vacuum sealed to promote ageing" in the tin.
When the tin is under complete vacuum no ageing will occur.

Latest Cellaring shipment arrived, 1lb MB's Vanilla Flakes and 100g of Frog Morton. This Cellaring is paying off already, my meager Cellaring program has already saved me over $1200 over tin prices here and I'm just shy of 4kg. My plan is to have a 13-14kg cellar in the end.
Can't wait for someone to get some bulk S&G FVF in stock.

Congratulations on the rationalized TAD math. Just think how much you'll be "saving" when you start in on the 5lb McClelland orders!

Wide mouth Ball jars for me. I seem to recall an article from G.L. Pease a while back about filling them, and screwing the lid tight. As far as the seal is concerned, the fermenting tobacco will create gas and form a pressure inside the jar; creating a seal all its own.
Also heard of guys who use a 3" plasic tubing, 2 wooden circular cutouts wrapped in wax paper, and a C-clamp to create a cake out of their tobacco over the course of 2ish weeks. http://www.smokersforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98226&highlight=cake

Mac Baren Mixture Flakes

Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flakes

Orlik Golden Sliced
I've been wanting to try the Golden Sliced so I'll probably open one of those tins soon. The other 4 cans being mostly virginias ought to keep and age well.
I don't know what to make of all the banning business but one thing is for sure- Tabacco ain't gonna get any cheaper so no harm in sitting on a bit of it.

For storing my tins I use a plastic container that locks down and keep it in a cool dark place. I just opened a tin of Orlick Golden that is 15 years old and it is in perfect condition. For my bulk tobacco I keep it in plastic jars that have those locks on it. It keeps my tobacco in great shape and has done so for over 10 years. I am also thinking of stocking up on some bulk blends that I enjoy.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I've got numerous tins that I've bought over the years tucked away in a few places, and at any given time I really don't know what I have on hand. Every now & then I discover some that I didn't know I had or can't recall buying lol.
Anyway, I've decided I really need to inventory it and make a list of exactly what I have, and start keeping track of how old they are.

Interesting with the jam jars. Would you recommend this for the occasional pipe smoker? I have two tins open right now that I doubt I would finish in 2 years? Should I put them in canning jars? I am also interested in cellaring- does anyone have ideas about how long a person should cellar particular blends? Is it like wine- will it peak at some point?

Mason jars are pretty much the standard for storing and aging tobacco. There are a bunch of threads on here about aging of tobaccos, some change more with age than others with virginias benefiting the most and aromatics changing the least.

You don't HAVE to buy new jars of you already have them. Just give them a good wash and get some new lids and/or bands (the bands only if they are rusty) and you're good to go.

What Jason said. Mine are all new jars but once they are empty I will just clean and sanitize them and use new lids and rings.
