California's First Tropical Storms in 84 Years

It's been raining all day with varying degrees of intensity here in LA County, the most torrential rain not expected for several hours. I was in my garage earlier, smoking my first bowl of the day, when I had a harrowing thought of how terrible it would be if during the worst storm to hit California in 84 years, we had an earthquake. Well, about a half hour later, my premonition came to fruition--a magnitude 5 temblor in neighboring Ventura County, hopefully not a foreshock of a more powerful jolt to come.

Pretty heavy here in Frazier Park, an hour and change north of you. I would guess perhaps two inches have already fallen, with more on the way. I did not feel the earthquake though, as I was outside at the time tending to our horse.

Next time, see if you can foresee, instead of an earthquake, a big 50% off sale at Tobacco Trader. Just putting that out there, Blavatsky...

Edit: Hey, at least there won't be any fires anytime soon!

We're getting heavy smoke due to all of the fires being set around the Medford area. I thought pyromania was a distinctly Californian problem. Turns out it's pretty universal.

Anyway, here's wishing that everyone stays safe, and that none of the hillside homes I partnered in building go tobogganing downslope.

I remember a (downgraded after landfall) hurricane hitting Arizona in either '98 or '99.

I guess the technical center of it---where the eye would have been if it had hung together?---must have crossed into the US on the east side of Yuma instead of the west side.




Seems like a mighty subtle distinction.

Sure enough, hurricanes hitting Baja and then bending a few miles east isn't rare at all. It happens every five years on average:

The rivers of blood thing is pretty advanced stuff. Usually the order is rivers of saliva first, then rivers of urine, then rivers of urine mixed with blood, and finally rivers of blood. At least that’s always been the case in my neighborhood.

The impression of weather having become more extreme recently is a matter of instant communication among the occupants of the planet, and politicians trying to capitalize on it.

(They've known since caveman days that no one will care about them---never mind put them in charge---if things are going smoothly. Confusion, problems, and and especially threats are their life blood.)

Exactly right !

But try telling that to the group of superannuated greenies who are out there weekly banging their drums and gongs in front of a bank (around the corner from my office) "because they are funding fossil fuel producers" As though such juvenile behaviour will influence a large international bank to change their investment strategy.

What is more absurd is that the Police Department deploys a squad car to ensure their right of protest and that they are not assaulted by someone taking exception to their disruptive noise.

Ageing legs/hips/knees means no marching these days
Content instead to stand around and bang their drums and gongs for a couple of hours

Then return to their centrally heated homes for a well earned cup of tea or hot cocoa
Fired no doubt by coal generated electricity or gas
