I look forward to trying those!! I do like the Penny Farthing I just struggle for the flavor. I should try it as a first smoke of the day.

And I do appreciate the samples!! Without them I would never try it.

I thought Penny Farthing a bit of a dud and won't be buying any more of it. But I also think that it will improve a bit with a few years of aging. It just tasted a bit green to me.

You're not at all rare. A few years back, mentions of C&D in fora, when they happened at all, were dismissive. I don't stock much of it myself as most of what I've sampled didn't make the grade. A few I found to be pretty good, and one is a favorite. IMHO, Virginias are not their strength, though they've improved a bit. And they now have less competition when it comes to Virginias, significantly less competition as McClelland is gone, Gawith, etc are in short supply, and HU isn't distributed domestically.

They've upped their game in the past couple of years with their small batch offerings. They've enjoyed a good reputation for their Burley blends. And they've even finally managed to find lids that fit their tins.
Is that both G&H and SG? Is this just hear say that they are in short supply?

Two questions about these new blends:

1. What type of perique? Is it vintage St James or just the more conventional green river burley?

2. Does perique age in any desirable way? What does 18 year old mean flavor wise? What I've read in the past (jiminks and GL Pease) seems to suggest that once perique is out of the barrel, the flavor doesn't really change that much with additional age.
With regard to the ten year aged Perique, actually closer to 15, that I bought from Mark Ryan a couple of hears back, it had been in the barrel for all of those years, and had developed an incredible fruitiness and sweet bouquet. Mark told me that it's existence was an accident. The barrel was overlooked since before Ryan took ownership of LA Poche. There's a video of them opening that barrel on youtube. The tubs don't address the origin of the Perique so I can't help you there, but you could ask Mark, if he goes to Chicago.

They're mostly out of stock with the usual suspects. Supply ebbs and flows. People have been posting about this a lot over the last year or so. Their blends are probably available at B&Ms that stock them. You can answer the question yourself by going online.
The Asian market is probably getting a bigger chunk of what they produce. That's speculation.

If their Wintertime Reserve: Evergreen is anything to go by, C&D is onto something with their perique, Va/Per blends. The other 3 Wintertime blends were all so-so, but I'm very sad I didn't cellar a few tins of the Evergreen.

They both sound delicious. C&D rarely disappoints. I can’t place an order until next weekend, by which time I’m sure both will be long gone. I groaned in frustration when I saw it pop up on Instagram. This paycheck I already bought an Ashton, Ropers Roundels, Irish Flake, some Arango Balkan Supreme, Sutliff Sobranie Original Match, and Planta Full English. I suppoooose I’ll have to content myself with such paltry consolation prizes ?
Good purchase there. I am buying zero with new hassles of giving up my ID over the internet etc. (even though I have several purchases over the last few years already). I'll be working with someone over the phone if the time ever comes on a big order at some supersale. Otherwise, local for me on any new purchases. I like the B&M on any new small purchases and probably won't smoke my cellar before I die already.

Fear of missing out has been trumped by fear of disappointment lately with all these special release blends. I think it's a great marketing strategy. How else would they sell 5000 tins of a brand new blend nobody's tried in a couple weeks?
Very true. A very smart marketing strategy indeed.

Agreed. It’s a losing strategy for me. It takes a little over two weeks for a SP.com package to get to me. So when I ordered some Mac Baren London Burley to try, they were sold out before I even got it to evaluate it. And I’m not getting a ton of tins just in case. That way lies madness.

I'm sure it's probably fine tobacco but I have new blend fatigue. Let someone else be the guinea pig with all these razzle-dazzle limited editions. My focus is the great blends that are already proven. That's work enough.

You should have been around when McClelland 40th Anniversary first arrived. Gone in a matter of hours.
I got my fair share of 2017 40th tins. And added a healthy portion of 2018 40th tins from later releases after I had a chance to smoke some. Surprisingly 40th held out longer than most of their popular Virginias after word of their closing got out, most likely because it had much higher inventory when the frenzy began.
With McClelland special releases you had a pretty good idea of what to expect. They had a reputation for actually releasing something special.

Funny thing, that. I logged onto P&C to look into what they required by way of official ID only to find out that I was already verified and good to go. Evidently they use two verification companies to help with abiding by this new law, and there was already enough data gathered by them for me to meet requirements. So I didn't have to upload diddly squat.

Just a gentle reminder that neither your privacy, nor your right to privacy continues to exist.

I remember tobaccopipes still advertising their 40th anniv allotment on social media months after it came out...can’t remember how long it took for them to finally sell out.
Two or three more waves came out before the closing. For some reason folks thought it was a limited release with the first drop. I always thought it was intended to be a 2018 Christmas Cheer before the FDA regulations killed it.

I bought my first tins of McC 40th in May of ‘17 and the last ones in Feb of ‘18 with several orders in between, all from SP. I don’t remember it ever being hard to get until the closure was announced.

I bought a few tins of the XX dark- while I haven’t had a lot of luck with C&D VA-based blends I’ll give this one a shot.
