I'm a burley devotee. I'll confine myself to a few suggestions. I like C&D in general for its use of burley both as a base tobacco and as a condiment, including blends like Old Joe Krantz original, Billy Budd with cigar leaf, Big'n'Burley, Dark Burley, Stratfordshire, Tuggle Hall, Night Bayou, and Mountain Camp.

In the Peterson line, I like Irish Flake and 3-P. Amphora Burley is a good pouch blend. I also like SWR and SWR Aromatic with Virginia as a condiment along with three liqueur flavorings.

Lately I've been enjoying GLP's Barbary Coast based in cube burley, with Virginia and Perique as condiments and flavored with brandy.

I bought two tins of C&D's Eight State Burley, but I plan to give it a little time to gestate. I smoked a tin of C&D's Riverboat Gambler and enjoyed it, but haven't ordered more; it has a good dose of burley, but some edges, and it may be a sort of acquired taste.

Some burley favorites of mine that fall in the unsweet category:
  • Dark Bird's Eye
  • Inns of Court
  • Barbary Coast
  • Americana
  • Old Joe Krantz variations (White/Blue/Red) are all worth trying
  • Adagio
  • Big N' Burley
  • Pegasus
Just be warned that some of these will be pretty nicotine heavy.... that comes with the territory when you get into stronger burley blends. But if you're able to smoke Old Joe Krantz without trouble then you should be fine.

I just purchase the following:
Briar Fox
Pegasus
Old Joe Krantz
Mac Baren Golden Extra
Hopefully that will give me a good reference point. I look forward to trying a couple of the others suggested also.
That's a nice range of choices, and each is truly different from the other though all have a good dose of burley.

@Mso I forgot to mention I tried Billy Budd (had to try cigar leaf) as I enjoy cigars. I can taste the burley but it’s in and out not a star player to my taste. On a side note, I started smoking cigars and pipes with a heavy lean toward cigars. Following what I’ve read on this site and the advice I’ve received posting, pipes are steadily marching to the front.

I just got turned onto Rich's Cigars (Portland, OR) Retro Grandpa. Burley based with five different ingredients, including unflavored Cavendish and Dark Fired Kentucky. The cost is steep due to Oregon taxes, but it's worth a try.

My only experience with Dark Fired Kentucky if ODF and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Too bad it’s from Portland , I prefer to buy American?. Just kidding, I will look into it.

Both C&D Bayou Night and its similar blend done in different proportions, Mountain Camp, took some "learning the blends" to get to enjoy them. Bayou Night was a little oppressive in strength on the first 2 oz., but year later when I ordered it again, it was like a different better blend. Mountain Camp started out a little too mild and not well integrated in flavors, but after four or five bowls, it really came together in a tasty way.

I received my order today much to my delight (standard shipping came quick!). I had time for a quick bowl after dinner and tried the Pegasus. Definitely can taste the Burley. Nice mild smooth smoke. I could smoke this all day.

Well, maybe you would like to, it is a suggestion, you can also try, C&D: Pirate Kake, the burley will come out of your ears. You will float in a cloud of burning charcoal, scorched flesh, and trumpets of the apocalypse. It is one of the best I have ever tasted........
:ROFLMAO: Damn, John! I've never been tempted to try Pirate Kake....until now!

Hello friend timt. For my taste, it is one of the best C&D blends. I have smoked this tobacco fresh, I don't know how it will be, when the few tins I keep, will be 5 years old or more. Too bad I can no longer buy from smokingpipes because of the current problems with customs and other anti-smoking policies. They were always very attentive and helpful. A great company SP. Try it friend timt, and tell us your sensations.
