Not usually. I thought it was unusual for a early era Barlings stem to have quality issues. Jesse's observation about it being a WWII era pipe, where materials were limited or compromised made sense.

Think of it as part of its history. What dates it for me is the nomenclature. The particular COM stamp was used in the late 30’s and early 40’s, and rarely after that. Also, there’s no “FOSSIL” stamp as was used after the war, nor a “NIBBLICK” stamp as was used in the 30’s. Barling added sandblast to their product offerings in 1943.
