My best advice as a new guy to a new guy (I've been smoking a pipe for about a year) is dont try and make it a science. There are some things that you just have to figure out on your own and that was part of the fun, for me at least.

Is that so, Life? Well, I will get that to you post-haste! Thank you very much!
I am thinking I will get a couple of the General ones, because they seem more flexible- You know, The fact that I could have either a large or a small bowl in such a pipe.
Now if only my Debit card would arrive.

Well as you can see you will get hundreds of different suggestions and all one hundred are great so just to add one more you may want to try Milan tobacconist..they have a good selection of tobacco's that are great for helping you decide what type of tobacco you will enjoy most. :puffy:

I certainly can agree with "terry" as I have Milan's Triple Crown, Milan's Wall Street and Milan's Buddies Blend in my rotation amongst my favorite C&D blends (including my own). Smoke variety and that way you will not tire your taste buds. Consider dedicating pipes to "similar-tasting" blends to avoid ghosting. Above all, use a pipe cleaner after every smoke and give your pipe a rest. In other words, you do need several pipes.

I have been looking at Milan Tobacconists for a while! A lot of their blends sound fantastic! I have, however settled on some other blends for my first batch, but I will most certainly be trying theirs in the future.

Welcome, ozymandias.
I hope you enjoy your new hobby.
Cobs are a good place to start, but also save up your money for a good briar. $65 is not too much to spend for a good quality pipe. Keep in mind that you may be still smoking it in 50 years or so. As you are saving, keep watching these discussions about what pipes others like and why.
Also for some ideas on tobaccos, if you haven't already done so, read this thread: Where to Start.

I may just be confusing the situation, but I would not recommend a cob. For me they have never been satisfactory. I believe most people would agree that a briar is ultimately a better choice. True, if you find a pipe is not for you the outlay will have been substantially more, but I believe you will have a better and more accurate experience of pipe smoking with a briar pipe. Of the two briars, I have never had a Jobey but I can recommend the Savinelli. A Nonpareil is a better grade from that company and other, more affordable models might be found. The full bent shape might not be the ideal choice for a first pipe, but it is not a major drawback, especially as the military bit on the Nonapareil is easy to remove for cleaning. I will mention that if the bit is vulcanite it will oxidize and Savinelli's bits are particularly prone to this. A little extra maintenance, but not a deal-killer.
As for tobacco, that's like asking if you should have coffee or tea; red wine or white. it's a matter of taste and there are thousands of blends to choose from. I would suggest you try a sampling of aromatics (everyone does) but they will never taste like they smell and can burn hot, wet, or gunk up your pipe. Or they may be just what you want!
At some point you should try a straight virginia, a burley and an English blend. Depending on how those appeal to you, there may be a lifelong journey of discovery beginning for you.

ozymandias, welcome and glad you went with corncobs. You might want to read my Corncob Primer, so you know the proper way to care for your cobs, which unlike some folks seem to think, aren't simply disposable pipes.

Iraisch I completely disagree with you on the topic of corncobs, that is the only thing some people smoke out of and are completely hated by others, just like baccy it is personal preference, and I don't believe spending 5-10 on a cob to see if you like it is a bad ideal, don't give up if you don't like the cob, but do try it :)

there is a lot to like and learn about pipe smoking ... it's a voyage of discovery you will like I'm sure.
start with aromatic tobaccos, do your research on what different tobaccos are out there (can't stress this enough if you want to get maximum enjoyment from the experience), and don't get discouraged along the way.
I would start with Lane Limited (which makes 1Q) and Peter Stokkebye aromatics.
for pipes, you've already got the right idea, briar and corn cob pipes are durable, tried and tested, and will serve you well.
enjoy yourself and welcome to the forums -Mike M

Thank you all so very much for the warm welcomes, as well as the advice! (Thank you especially to LifeOn2 for... returning... the tobacco I lost...)
You guys are seriously great, and I expect to be here for quite a while.

Welcome aboard!
I enjoy my cobs, so I will agree that's a great place to start. I will be a bit contrary, however, as a non-aromatic smoker, and not push aros. I don't know what is on your list, but if you don't have 2 oz of one of the "American Classics" - Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc. - dump one of the aros and add one of those fine old blends to your list. These uncomplicated blends are a reat place to start, and smoke great in a cob. (Smoking SWR in a MM Diplomat right now. :puffy:)

Welcome aboard ozy! You can't go wrong with 1Q (Lawrence can attest to that). Smoked two bowls of it last night and it is fantastic stuff. Also, the Corncob General would be a very good choice. I own three and they serve me well. There are three very important things that I have learned in my time as a pipe smoker that have made the experience much more enjoyable for me. 1. Pack lightly. 2. Smoke slowly. 3. Be sure to try your tobaccos at different moisture levels. Different people will react to different moisture levels in tobaccos and you should find out what works best for you. If a tobacco seems to smoke hot and flavorless, try leaving it out to dry for a little while. Or if a tobacco is too dry it might smoke too harsh as well. And as dhizzy said, there are some things that you just kind of have to figure out by trial and error. Good luck on your new endeavor! You made a good choice picking up a pipe and a good choice coming here.

One thing I would recommend would be not to start off with aros. I started smoking almost a year ago and my first tobacco was an aro. They can taste great but they also can be hard to smoke. I always got tongue bite when I started and thought that it was just all part of the experience. Now that I have started smoking other tobaccos I enjoy them a lot more and I have learned how to smoke my aros a lot better.

Well, Let me outline what I think I shall probably be getting, Tobacco-Wise. It is a pretty wide swath of Blends, I'd say.
First, The Bulks:

Lane 1-Q (Two Ounces)

Luxury Bullseye Flake (Two Ounces

Shortcut to Mushrooms (One Ounce)

Old Toby (One Ounce)

Ruins of Isengard (One Ounce)

Treebeard (One Ounce)

Smoker's Mystery (One Ounce)
Now, The Tins!:

Anniversary Kake (One and One Half Ounces)

Devil's Holiday (One and Three-Quarters of an Ounce)

Early Morning Pipe (One and Three-Quarters of an Ounce)

Frog Morton on the Town (One and Three-Quarters of an Ounce)

Orlik Golden Sliced (One and Three-Quarters of an Ounce)
Plus, whatever LifeOn2 is going to send me, (May the Hair on his toes never fall out!) as well as whatever I get from that place that sends you a free tin.
NOW! TIME FOR BACKSTORY!
Gandalf, Dwarves, and Mister Baggins! We are met together in the house of our friend and fellow conspirator, this most excellent and audacious Hobb- Oh I am sorry... Wrong Speech...
Ahem.
Well, it was Four days before my birthday and I was Browsing Reddit as I am often wont to do! (Also, keep in mind I have been a Life-Long Fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, and have always loved Gandalf's pipe) When I stumbled upon a perfectly innocent comment, something along the lines of- Mind, this was in reply to someone else's comment, and completely off topic...
Your username would be a fantastic name for a Pipe Tobacco: "Old [Insert his Username here]"
This sends my mind reeling! "Old [Insert his Username here]! That reminds me of Old Toby: The Finest Pipeweed in the Southfarthing!"
I then go and watch the scene where Gandalf Blows a Smoke Ship... several times...
"Say... I wonder if they make a pipe tobacco called Old Toby!" I then rush to Google.
After quite a bit of searching- "Oooh! Justforhim's Middle-Earth Series! They sell Old Toby! I would love to have some of that, just because!"
"Wait... I am going to be Eighteen soon... I could... actually smoke it? Great Scott! I wonder if they sell Gandalf's pipe!"
The rest, of course, Is history.
After that I started learning everything I could! I would Scour Youtube, and Google for any information at all! This led to /r/pipetobacco and, in time, to this most estimable bastion of human kindness!
I hope you enjoyed my story.
FIN.
