Mine is places that post signs and menus: "Smoking area (or smoking allowed)" and then state "no cigars or pipes please (or cigarettes only)."
I've yet to see a sign like that, but I've heard members say they are out there - can't understand the logic there at all.

6, I have seen those signs for years. I have been in bars plenty of times and was told to put out my cigar while the cigarette smokers happily puffed away. When I used to smoke cigarettes I had a guy who was getting me Cuban ones. I would light them up and everyone would start looking around for the guy smoking a cigar, they smelled just like one. I would laugh my ass off as the bartender or manager would try and find the cigar smoker.

Cigrmaster,
[quality of the briar definitely does have a lot to do with the quality of the smoking experience. If the briar is not properly cured it will smoke wet and hot. So you also hate to hear that gurgling, it is annoying isn't it.]
I'm curious about this. Will a briar ever age or cure properly? Can and does a pipe get better with age or does it get worse with age? Love this post!
Rick

mthanded, if a piece of briar is not properly cured and aged before it is made into a pipe, no matter how old it gets it will not turn into a good pipe. If it starts out smoking wet and hot, no amount of age will help it. There is a reason basket pipes are cheap, they are not good briar, they are not cured and aged properly, that takes time and money.

PPP (pet pipe peeve).........A stem that tapers to too large a thickness and is way difficult to deal with. Only had a couple estates ( hard to determine just from fotos ) but they definitely have to be customized even if they are roughed up a bit.And they were great lookin pipes, justa lousy stem taper.

A pipe that smokes hot really bugs me. Not if the bowl gets hot though, that is easily cureable, just set it down. I am talking about a pipe, that no matter how you pack it, or what you are smoking in it, you can feel the heat in your mouth. Not just a little heat, but alot. I have some very nice pipes, and no, they are not basket pipes, that no matter what you do, you keep getting that blast of heat.

The dreaded "kickback" ... getting condensation up the stem, stuff is about as Tasty as turpentine and, to me, is the worst part of pipe smoking.

That's interesting about your Americans being the dryer ones in your collection. The gurgle is bothersome but it doesn't happen to me much anymore. What is irritating is when a breeze or rogue wind kicks up and blows a hot spark onto my arm or shirt. Put a nice big burn hole in the front of a polo shirt the other day. :x

I can't believe that pipe and cigar smoke is offensive to cigarette smokers. Though I haven't seen it, that fact that it exists pisses me off.

Smoking a straight pipe in my truck and forgetting the window is up when I turn my head and nearly dislodging my teeth. But I had a gurgly pipe too.

Indeed! I never thought of that one. So here is another. Trying to make a left turn while holding a Churchwarden in your right hand.

* Gurgle, then it slurps into the mouth before you can catch it
feel-sick.png

* When the pipe looks great online and then turns out to be something so different once it arrives in shipping

* Tobacco that folks call so sweet, like candy and then you buy it and tastes like perique which is most def. not sweet

People who believe that because they spend more on a pipe that it makes it better smoker .A pipe has two holes a big one and one small one . And sometimes a even bigger one holding it .

Some of my pet peeves are a restricted draw, the current price of Dunhill pipes (insane) and to an extent excess moisture. I still use a pipe cleaner on my American pipes but I think its more due to how I smoke than properly cured briar. I know the stuff is, heck, I have seen the actual blocks my S&Rs were made from. Engineering is also a big pet peeve, I hate when the even the basics are not right. Doubly so on more expensive pipes.

I have two; pipes with stingers and heavily cased tobacco. If you want a gurgler, get a pipe with a stinger. The tobacco contributes heavily to gurgling. Pipe tobacco can have a large amount of casing sauces; from 25% to 35% by weight, according to Nat Sherman's book "All About Tobacco", published in 1970. English law up until the mid 1980's prohibited the use of casing sauces. According to another forum, some English blenders stick to the old ways. Consequently, English tobacco smoked drier and gave you a longer smoke. I would say my biggest pet peeve is heavily cased tobacco.

Not being able to order Penzance, that really pisses me off...
the gurgling don't bother me as much as when some of the pipe juice gets in my mouth, it taste like crap...
+1 Hobie---Small Bowls
+1 John---Stingers, I never buy a pipe with one, and if i accidently did, I throw the stinger away or sell the pipe
