I have this thing about pipes that smoke wet in any way shape or form. When I first got into pipes I did not understand that drilling and quality of briar could make a pipe smoke wet. I learned the hard way with 3 Peter Matzhold pipes that were the wettest smokers I ever came across. Luckily I purchased them as estates and good old coopersark bailed me out of them, covering my costs. Now when I buy pipes I try and make sure they are not wet smokers. I ask the seller if the pipe is drilled right and that the whole is to the very bottom of the bowl. I buy pipes from quality carvers expecting that their briar is properly cured and aged. In my collection now I do not have any wet smokers, but I do have pipes that smoke drier than any others. All of my American artisan pipes smoke dry as a bone and have never needed one pipe cleaner which I am quickly becoming addicted to. My Upshalls, Ferndowns, Winlows,Dunhills,Savinelli's and others all smoke real good, but I still need a pipe cleaner once or twice a bowl in most of them. Now in reality it isn't a big deal but for some reason I really dislike hearing that gurgle even once. I used to think that a gurgle hear or there was because I live in 90 percent humidity, but since I have seen my American pipes never do it, I know it is the difference in the pipe itself.
So what are you guys pet peeves? Is it a pipe that smokes wet, or hot or other reasons?

I hate getting tobacco in my mouth. I have learned that if I buy bulk I want to physically look over it before I buy it. Sometimes it is a broken up into very small pieces and it will get your mouth easier that way. I also don't like wet smokes as you said but at my current situation I can't be too picky. Budget doesn't allow for me to get a good pipe quite yet.

There is a reason I love corn cob pipes, best draw ever, never a wet smoke, cheap & the best of all is the stem is softer than vulcanite and costs 50 cents to replace!

Interesting post, I was wondering what causes gurgle other than wet tobacco. I have one pipe that gurgles more than the others—early on I had a difficult time believing the quality of the briar can affect a pipe's smokability - but sure does seem that way.
I haven't given the pet peeve idea a lot of thought, but gurgle has got to be up there.

Eric, this thread is about pet peeves, not about how great you think cobs are. I know you love them and I think that is great. You keep saying they have the best draw ever, to you that may be so, but to plenty of us they don't. Yours may smoke dry but the one I tried did not. Please let's keep this to pet peeves, not how great you think cobs are.

6, quality of the briar definitely does have a lot to do with the quality of the smoking experience. If the briar is not properly cured it will smoke wet and hot. So you also hate to hear that gurgling, it is annoying isn't it.

lol - I cannot stand the sound to be honest, and it bugs me to have to use a pipe cleaner in the middle of a smoke too. That said, the pipe that gurgles the most is a cheap BBB estate pipe and I didn't have high hopes for it in the first place - I just liked the look of it - and it otherwise smokes very well (no bitterness, doesn't get too hot) so all in all, I can't complain too much.
I would feel much differently if I spent a bundle on it.

I have to say I agree with you, my smoking pet peeve is definitely a wet pipe. I hate it among all other things.

I have the same pet-peeve, hate a pipe to have moisture in the stem. I seldom use a pipe cleaner

during my smoke, but do point the stem down when I take if from my mouth. After a few seconds,

touch the stem to my thigh. Moisture is gone, and it's just the condensation from the combustion

of the tobacco so there is no stain. The little wet spot drys in just a few minutes.

Biggest pet peeve..... people that flick lit cigarettes from their cars. I used to write the citation every chance I got. In AZ it was a criminal violation, and if you wanted to be a bigger jerk, I could arrest you for it. When I worked nights it was like a big red flare out your window...."Here I am, I'm a dumb-ass, come write me a citation...." Not to mention the obvious (to most folks) fire risk of doing this out in the county rural areas I used to patrol.

Guys, when I say pet peeves I am talking about ones you might have in regards to pipe smoking, not the ones in our everyday lives. Hell that list would be huge.
