I have this thing about pipes that smoke wet in any way shape or form. When I first got into pipes I did not understand that drilling and quality of briar could make a pipe smoke wet. I learned the hard way with 3 Peter Matzhold pipes that were the wettest smokers I ever came across. Luckily I purchased them as estates and good old coopersark bailed me out of them, covering my costs. Now when I buy pipes I try and make sure they are not wet smokers. I ask the seller if the pipe is drilled right and that the whole is to the very bottom of the bowl. I buy pipes from quality carvers expecting that their briar is properly cured and aged. In my collection now I do not have any wet smokers, but I do have pipes that smoke drier than any others. All of my American artisan pipes smoke dry as a bone and have never needed one pipe cleaner which I am quickly becoming addicted to. My Upshalls, Ferndowns, Winlows,Dunhills,Savinelli's and others all smoke real good, but I still need a pipe cleaner once or twice a bowl in most of them. Now in reality it isn't a big deal but for some reason I really dislike hearing that gurgle even once. I used to think that a gurgle hear or there was because I live in 90 percent humidity, but since I have seen my American pipes never do it, I know it is the difference in the pipe itself.
So what are you guys pet peeves? Is it a pipe that smokes wet, or hot or other reasons?
