Briar Blues on YouTube gave some good advice. He said to not fill your bowl up to the top to prevent excessive rim darkening. I took it to heart and always leave about 3/16” space. I also use soft match flame lighters, Corona and Kiribi.

And after you get it cleaned up, moisten the rim with spit before you light to help prevent future charring.
