Stay away from the goop and the OTC. Want a good semi-aromatic try Orlik Racing Green. Want a good aromatic try Gawith Hogarth and co Bobs Chocolate flake. Other than that GLPease and Cornell and Diehl tobaccos would be the end game. IMHO

Wirtsleg, I think the cut of the leaf is most important factor for the new pipe man. Packing right is the big challenge. Poor pack equals disappointing smoke and that can turn off even the very enthusiastic A ribbon cut like Carter Hall is known for ease of pack, light and smoke and is probably a good answer.

My first four were: - ( I am still new but still smoking after 6 months and enjoy these)

Murrays Yachtsman (a mild aromatic)

Alsbo Cherry (lots hate it here! but sweet, simple and easy)

Gawiths American Delight (rounded, mellow aromatic)

Dunhill Elizabethan (good first English blend style non aromatic)

Hearth and home Berry Nice is my new favorite aromatic. I would recommend this over 1Q as a first tobacco for anyone now. You will be surprised that it really tastes how it smells in the tin and is just like hookah smoking where the flavors really are flavors and not just smells.

and as for warren, before pointing out grammar/sentence making flaws someone makes, you should learn to capitalize your own name in your username :laughat:

thedudeabides agrees with dude: Frog Morton's Cellar. Complex enough to be interesting, but sweet (and light in strength) enough to please a newcomer - and those around him or her!

Yeah what everyone else said.... In honesty though it's all trial and error what blends you enjoy and what blends are meh... Also trial and error of pipe shapes and different blends. That's what makes this hobby fun.

Sentence structure seems pretty good actually. I wouldn't recommend a sampler as you're paying about 5$ an ounce when you can simply order the same tobacco in the sampler for about half the price just by adding them yourself to the checkout cart online. What kind of cigars do you smoke? Mild, medium, full bodied or all 3? This will help with suggestions. I find from smoking cigars to the pipe you might puff to hard at first, which is common for alot of converts at first. If you have a really mild blend I find you really puff hard then pay the price later. Tell us what cigars you like and it will help with recommending, alot of us like both. I like mild, medium and full bodied cigars but don't like mild pipe tobacco

I sort of dabbled for a long while, but when I first tried Penzance of a 2001 vintage, that's when I said I'm officially a pipe smoker :)

Can´t believe no one has recommended Scotty´s HPCS Trout Stream or Butternut Burley. I also like Lane RLP6 or Lane BCA.
If you don´t want to wait for delivery or don´t have a local pipe store go to the closest Walgreens and buy a pouch of Captain Black, it´s a "good" drug store tobacco.

MacBaren's Virginia #1. If you can develop your technique slow enough to taste the sweetness of this blend without blistering your mouth, then you are ready to try other blends. Starting with any other blend is just riding with training wheels or starting with a big fat pencil, you will just develop bad habits. Nope, I suggest a clay pipe and one pound of Virginia #1, someone lock him in a room with these and don't let him out until he has finished.

Then after you have become a real pipe smoker, you will never want Virginia #1 again, and the world will be your oyster.

Keep the amounts of any blend you buy small. Your tastes will change and develop. No matter how much you like a blend, pick up only a pouch or one tin for the first year or two, and try various blends. Take it slow. If something isn't appealing, store it in a small canning jar and come back and try it later; it may improve with aging, or you may grow into it. This is a real exploration; take your time.

Interesting that Trout Stream came up. I have enjoyed that without interruption for the past month (not so that I have not strayed to other lovers...).
