Y'know, a tin of My Mixture 965 or Standard Mixture is perfect learner's fodder. Right in the middle of everything and easily available.

Wow was there anything not recommened as a started tobacco? Mixture 79 all the way to aged Penzance! My local tobacconist said I had to start on Aros. I was a fool and listened to him but the second sample I got was a cross over blend.
I would have to say that there is no one place to start. Get a sample/ tin of something and try it. Either continue to explore that area with your next purchase or jump to somewhere very different. Probably using something like "Sutliff tobacco helper" might give someone a good starting place (see here)

You are going to get (and are getting) a lot of opinions on this. This is just my 2 cents. I'm not an expert.
When I first started smoking I pipe I, too, was a cigar smoker. I started with the aromatic Lane 1Q. I currently love Lane 1Q. BUT, it is VERY sweet compared to a cigar. I always drank Coke with my cigars to balance with some sweetness. When I started smoking my pipe I approached it like cigar smoking. Wrong! Drinking Coke with Lane 1Q was horrible, and I always puffed too hard, masking the flavors. Now that I know how to smoke a pipe, I have found an assortment of wonderful flavors from 1Q. It's a subtle tobacco. It's truly a great tobacco, and though it CAN be good for beginners it is sometimes discounted quickly because of inexperience.
A second option, since you are used to a more natural tobacco flavor with cigars, may be to try light english blends. My favorite is the Frog Morton series. Not too heavy and yet full of natural flavors.
Note: pipe tobacco will not taste like cigars. I expected it to when I started. Don't compare light or heavy-bodied cigars to pipe tobaccos. They are two different animals; like dogs and cats. Some love dogs; some love cats. And some learn to love both, and have a wonderful experience with both in their home. I hope this will be the case with your experiences.
Welcome to the pipe!

Welcome to the forum, You have received some of the forum satire a good number of choices already as well at this point, so I would only add that you must get the basics down above all else. Packing, cadence, etc. Aromatics, as well as any other tobacco, will burn your tongue off if you do not spend some time working on these. There is no short cut for trial and error. If you do the homework, reading and learning from threads on the forum on the subject, you can arrive at a place where you are a contented pipe smoker far faster. Best of luck.
