The overall length from bottom bowl to mouthpiece following the contour its approximately 8 1/2" outer bowl top diameter is 3cm / inner bowl 2cm / outside bowl height approximately 5cm / and 9cm from bowl base front to mouthpiece silver joint that is also following the contour of the pipe also. Can you make sense of this Jesse

Wow. Even given the break in the amber, that's a really special pipe. Truly top of the line and probably very expensive.

I have seen 1 other on this site of this length the guy was i think selling his through e-bay, apparently it went to a Canadian buyer for £342 granted his was in one piece but it did not have a windcap or silver screw fit mouthpiece like this one i will list the item and see how it travels. I know the damage may hold it back a lot. A lot of the UK restores i spoke to have said its best left as is and let the potential buyer use his own recommended restorer. but i am not here to promote the pipe for sale purposes i was just after some sound advice which i have had in abundance. but i am grateful for your comment pitchfork i am glad you like it

Nice extra pictures Kingfisher, particularly of the silverwork. I never realised it was a screw tenon, I assumed it was a military fit going by the earlier pictures...I clearly need new glasses.
A splendid specimen indeed. Jesse, would that amber stem be actual amber or a moulded piece from granular amber?
Regards,
Jay.

"Actual amber that would be shaped by hand, not molded."
Thanks for that Jesse, it must have started as a fair sized hunk of amber before being shaped but for the life of me I can't figure out how it was drilled....it being curved and all.
Regards,
Jay.

Drilled before shaped perhaps?

Aha! I thought when he said 'shaped' he meant shaped or cut directly from a single lump and shaped into the curve. It makes sense now. It was cut, drilled and then 'bent' into the curved shape.

Jay.

The amber used for stems wasn't the highest quality, which was reserved for jewelry, was fairly translucent, and generally of a more reddish color. But the amber used for stems was better suited for the purpose as it was a bit tougher than the clearer variety. Nonetheless, amber needs to be handled with care as it it brittle and can snap. No alcohol for cleaning amber, and never put it pin a freezer when trying to fix a stuck stem.

Kinfisher, it's a very special pipe, I'm just catching up on this thread. Just for fun, a 1909 BBB with BBB hallmarks. Those old sterling screw tenons are a thing of beauty! This pipe is pitchfork's, not mine. :)
