It would be interesting to know whether unfiltered pipe smokers get more of this than filter users. I use 9 mm filters and don't really get a claggy mouth. At least, not so I notice, but of course that could just be my choice of tobaccos. But while the tobacco doesn't ghost my mouth, the pipe does. If I've smoked right up to bedtime I wake in the morning with jaw-memory, the feeling that I've still got a pipe clenched in my teeth.

But the problem vanished altogether when I stopped eating processed food. Sounds odd, but it's true. Also, the chronic gum disease I'd had for years disappeared as well. Recently I gave up alcohol too and things have been better still since that.
Yes. I look askance at anything that gives me indigestion -- tomato, bread, coffee -- it's likely to be affecting other areas with inflammation.

Hi all.

I've noticed that if I smoke in the late afternoon or evening, I inevitably wake up with a bad taste in my mouth and a slightly irritated throat. This happens even on nights that I have dinner after smoking, and I always brush my teeth and rinse with mouthwash before bed. I take my time and smoke slowly, so I'm fairly certain I'm not "scorching" my mouth and throat or anything like that. I DO, however, retrohale quite often - almost 80% of the time. Could this be a contributing factor?

Anyhow, I was just curious if anyone else experiences this issue and if you have found any ways to remedy it. Thanks for your advice!
retrohale could be the problem. The sinuses are more likely to drain into your mouth instead of straight down your throat like they normally would.

I am a committed filter smoker, mostly 9mm. Every time I see the filter stained with tar after a bowl I'm really glad I use them. And they are great at absorbing steam, too. I don't think I could smoke pipes without them.

I'm the same. I never get tongue bite with them either.
