For me the usual oral hygiene goes with Thayers. Thayers makes a lozenge with slippery elm which can help ease sore throat. I understand singers use it. I also use riccola honey flavor after smoking. No they do not have tupelo honey. The menthol though works. Old fashioned listerine works too if you can stand the burn after smoking. Caution. Mints menthol and mouthwash (has a ring to it) make tongue bite increased if you have symptoms of that. Also you might be experiencing something related to how you are smoking in terms of cadence and tongue bite. The tobacco itself could be causing it as some have lingering aftertaste just by their nature. Thats the beauty of this hobby. Experimenting.

I used to get that throat thing but have not had that at all even if I smoke a lot since using a zippo or matches. Also I don't retrohale as it's just gross to me (like I get more tar less nuance from doing that). Also smoking drier blends helps in fact I only get that if I smoke really wet blends.

I appreciate this thread. I'm a new smoker myself, and have noticed this same thing. When I smoke, it's after work. And it seems to happen no matter which tobacco blend I'm smoking - I'll wake up with a terrible acrid aftertaste in my mouth the next morning, no matter how much tooth brushing, mouth rinsing, or mouthwash I use. I think I can safely say this is happening due to my cadence.


I'm glad to have a judgement-free place to learn.

If I smoke a pipe in the evening, which is my favorite time to smoke when I get the chance, I do have that pipe aftertaste in my mouth until my morning coffee.

If I smoke a cigar, I taste that damn thing for 3 days. Gets old quick.

In addition to brushing my teeth and using mouth wash, I always use a tongue scraper which is available at any pharmacy.

If your tongue is heavily coated it absorbs the tobacco smoke and flavor big time. Then you sleep with it and wake up with Genghis Khan breath.

Also reduces the bacteria and may help with the sore throat.

Give it a try, can't hurt.

I don't know if this applies in this case, but anyone experiencing changes in taste should consider any new medications you may be taking. I was recently prescribed a medication in a fairly heavy dose that makes all coffee taste stale and suppresses my appetite. I'm hoping the doc will wean me off this as soon as possible, but I'm pretty sure it is the culprit.

I find that the less dark-fired, perique or heavy alkaline burley components, the better it is for my mote. Really getting into straight and lightly-condimented VAs now. Far easier on the soft tissues.

What works for me gargling with a mouthwash of between 3-6% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Doing this cleans the tongue and palate, whitens the teeth and kills any bacteria. I’ve been doing this for years with great success.

Up until a few months ago I'd had terrible rhinitis for a couple of years. It only really affected me at night and meant that as soon as I lay down I couldn't breath through my nose. Sleeping with your mouth open to breath dries your mouth out an leaves you feeling like it's been coated in shellac by the morning, It can even be painful. I used to wake in the night with what felt like the world's worst tongue bite. And that was before I took up the pipe. I even had bleeding gums and blood in my sinuses.
If you're in any way susceptible to rhinitis, smoking, whether you inhale, retrohale of just puff, is highly likely to exacerbate it. And if you're sleeping with your mouth open you'll wake with a mouth like the bottom of a parrot's cage. I found the adhesive nasal strips helped. But the problem vanished altogether when I stopped eating processed food. Sounds odd, but it's true. Also, the chronic gum disease I'd had for years disappeared as well. Recently I gave up alcohol too and things have been better still since that.
This all suggests I'd been living with high cellular inflammation without knowing it. The main cause, I believe, was diet, made worse by alcohol. If I hadn't fixed this I doubt I'd have been able to tolerate pipe smoking. As it is, I smoke quite heavily, especially in the evenings, yet I don't get these problems any more. Smoking tobacco isn't good for your mouth health, but in my case it wasn't the cause of my problems because they ceased before taking up the pipe after making other lifestyle changes taking up pipe smoking since then hasn't brought them back.

A bit of mouth clag is to expected from smoking tobacco but with good oral hygiene it shouldn't be excessive. But I guess what I'm trying to say is, if it is excessive, it could be that taking up pipe smoking, rather than causeing these problems, could be revealing another underlying cause.
