Astley's threads turn up occasionally here.
The swamp is deep isn't it? I only pick up the occasional curiosity these days, having gathered enough I really should be letting some go. I've had a couple of disappointments but mostly, I've been fortunate and I'm thankful for that. The frustration and passion are things I do understand and appreciate.

Out of curiosity, and I'm not sure why I didn't do this earlier, I had AI do a scan of the pipe and gave it the pipe's 74g weight. It was asked to match this pipe with any known Peterson pipe model of that of any other source. It considered the weight, orifice button, detailed images of the stamping. I asked it to scour the internet for images of Peterson models, Astley's stamping from different eras, Azrati's known pipes (with the known controversies and dishonest stamping), as well as the "Silver" script stamped ferrule. The conclusions it made with arguments of proof for those conclusions were quite interesting. I do love a good mystery!

So looking at the thread from 12 years ago, one user has helpfully posted a response from Ezrati himself. All he does is question the integrity of those raising the complaints. That's a guilty move if ever there was one. The man was as crooked as a nine-bob note. His legacy stands as one who shat all over the reputation and history of two of the great pipe making houses. Well done that man.

Yep, since I've begun my brief look into this, I've come across people who've enjoyed a nice pipe for years and now question the genuineness of it. That is a terribly sad thing. Thanks for your input, by the way. I happen to value different perspectives.

Astley pipes never commanded a premium. The worst outcome was that Ezrati cast pallor on the James Upshall brand. Estate values for that brand have never recovered.

Consider it a mystery, a palimpsest of pipes, and likely a good smoker at that. I do believe that a previously unknown tale of Merlin was recently discovered that way.

Say it ain't so! Astley with Les Wood silver. Stem isn't rubber (I think) so possibly Ashtonite.

Looking at the close up of the nomenclature , there does appear to be some "ghost" stamping. I dont see anything in the "ghost" stamping to suggest a Peterson or Savinelli has been erased. It looks like an earlier Astley stamp has been re-done.

Who made it ? I have no idea. I can only repeat what is already known: Astley bought in all their pipes and it's known that pipes were supplied by Charatan, Upshall, Dunhill, Invicta and quite probably others .

Everything you say is strictly true. But it's a very specific (and copied) shape that doesn't appear in catalogs, and no other example turns up in a Google search. If it's indeed an Astleys pipe, it's a very rare and scarce example.

But you don't want us to know what they are....?
