Ok, probably not my place to do this and if i am out of line i am sorry, i do see this cropping up a bit here and there and i feel a little discussion about it may do more good than harm.
Forums get new people all the time which is a good thing. Along with new people comes a torrent of questions which is another good thing, as they show a willingness to learn. Mixed in with those questions are usually questions that have been flogged to death or someone is showing signs of never trying to find out an answer for themselves.
This is where problems can begin.
For most people answering the same questions over and over isn't a problem and they are happy to do it. Some people are happy to answer questions providing that the person asking seems to be making an effort to find out things for themselves.
When people ask a question people will answer which is one of the many reasons the forum is here. There is a difference between being lazy and really being unable to find the answers you need.
Nothing changes drastically in the pipe world so for most things finding an old post will give the correct answer.
When people ask questions not everyone will know the answer word for word. Some people like myself will Google the answer for that person or even give a link to an article from somewhere. Expecting people to do it for themselves isn't being rude or unhelpful but you could say expecting people to do it all for you is.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Now nobody is saying don't ask questions if you really cannot find something then ask away.

For many questions a quick Google search will get you a instant answer and as there are usually many answers to some questions a little more insight is never a bad thing.
Here are some helpful hints to make searching for answers a bit easier.
pipesmagazine.com
Yes that's right the very website you are on has many many articles on various pipe subjects.

Using the website search function can find many interesting articles. You can also find some on the lower left sidebar. It is a long scroll down but they are there.
SEARCH the Forum
As it has been mentioned before the forum search function is lacking but it can work. I have found things using it.
Google is your Friend
you can find out practically anything you want to know and then find some things you didn't realize you wanted to know.

If your Google-Fu is lacking then try using only certain words. "I want to find out about Cleaning a Pipe using Retort", i could type in that whole sentence. Missing some of the words can give better results.

So i type in "Clean Pipe Retort"
Youtube
There are many useful video's on Youtube covering many topics about pipe smoking.
Typing Pipesmagazine in with Google searches can usually work out better than using the search function
Anyone got anymore hints or tips? :)

When i was brand new, i posted a lot of questions. Mostly because you can read thousands of different answers from many different websites. I only had a few diff tobaccos to try and 1 pipe. Once i learned what websites to trust and had more tobaccos and pipes to try i quit the asking and did more reading. I think this is common when it comes to people who we recognize as new. If i find more than one answer to my questions on different websites i come to here to lean on the knowledge of experience that can be found from the members here. I think when we recognize a new memeber we need to embrace them and not alienate them. We need to grow our community and not make it smaller. The more pipe smokers out there the more people we have that can work against the antis and help to educate people. Maybe even help or stop legislation against us.
And.....off my sopabox

hawk60ce So you think by expecting people to look for info themselves that is easily available on this very website instead of just making a new post is alienating them?

Thanks, sixmp for posting this. You are right, that searching first will yield many answers to questions that have been asked previously. Finding them with our wonky search engine is a exercise in futility UNLESS it has the proper tags added to it. If everyone that thought a thread was good enough to add a tag that might help others, it'd go a long way. OTHERWISE, searching Google in following manner:

[YOUR QUESTION/INFORMATION THAT YOU'RE LOOKING AN ANSWER TO] site: pipesmagazine.com/forums
Then you just go through the links that pop up. That simple. It's how I find most threads I need to...
It should also be said that we LOVE questions! We NEVER want anyone to feel like they aren't welcome here. (OK, maybe there are a few who aren't welcome, but they are spammers and trolls, and don't warrant our time-of-day) So ask away!
This said, if you feel that someone is treating you, less than respectfully, please let one of the Mod team (myself, Lawrence, or Ben (uberam3rica) know so that we can intervene and take appropriate action. That's why we're here.
OK, to recap:

Questions, good.

When in doubt, get a Mod involved.
Thanks!
-Jason

I tried to only ask questions that weren't asked before.
I'm one to search out all the other forums(this one and the 2 others i frequent), the web and youtube before asking questions.
I don't mind answering questions, and sometimes I do, if so, I just wont answer. Or I'll direct the newbie to a topic that was already started.
I think if new members feel like there not welcome, they might not stay with the hobby.
Words of advise
Get what you want and smoke what you like...

New pipe smokers are going to ask repeated questions and all the cussing, complaining, and bitching isn't going to change a thing, all it does is make simple questions into a flame war. If you don't care to answer questions move on to the next thread. What is so hard about that? I say ask away!!

I see this forum as someplace akin to college. There are senior class members here who have seen, read, answered and commented on just about everythingover the years. Then there are the freshmen and sophomres who are still feeling their way around and, on occassion, ask the same questions we did early on. I think we're all here to help one another enjoy our hobby and if that means answering the same question for the 50th time then so be it. There are many topics I choose not to read or comment on because they either do not interest me or someone has already given wise advice.

I've noticed a lot of new people joining in the past several months and to them I say ask, learn and then pass your new knowledge on to the next crop of feshmen. This is the only way to keep pipe smoking an enjoyable and sustainable past time.

Whew, time for a nap now. Thanks.

There are also Pipe Smokers Forums for lively community discussion as well as a great place to get all your questions answered about pipe smoking directly from real pipe smokers.

From the About Us link in the fine print at the bottom of the page.

papipeguy... what a perfect analogy... I say ask away as well
I think what bothers people is the trivial simple questions that are asked by beginners... but to that I would say that we ALL were brand new to this hobby or habit or whatever you want to call it at one time. So be patient and impart your knowledge and if its too simple then you have the option of passing the thread... its really that simple.

Some people like me pick up the pipe with no one to teach them how to do it. The forums are a great way to learn. Granted searching is more efficient. Here is my first post from 2010:
http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/define-inhale-please
I admit I am new to smoking a pipe, or any form of tobacco. I understand inhale, exhale and hold breath. What do you guys mean by "pipe smokers don't inhale like cigarette smokers." Every video I see of pipes shows billows of smoke coming out. Please explain what what you mean.

I'm all for asking question but I was able to find a lot of information on the forum before I started a new thread. At least give the search a try. If you then can't find an answer start a new thread. It's that easy. I don't mind answering the same question over but I want to see some effort on your own. A thread started to help others with information or wanting to see others specific collections is a good way to give back as well. It shows that you care about the forum and these wonderful people.

:) thats right!!!
original post
I am not going to stop asking my questions in the forums as new posts...
Sure there may be older posts about the same question, but I like the social aspect of posting my own
and getting people who are on present day that I like to give some input if they want.
(and if this is giving me a link to another thread that THEY recommend, then fantastic, I have
a friend's recommendation on a previous thread that holds my answer)
I understand this is in relation to what happened last night, and that's cool...
But don't try to force newcomers away from posting questions... They will leave this site immediately
as I would have if I saw that when I joined. You are basically telling new people to not ask questions...
Well I was born with the philosophy "no question is a stupid question", so here they come :)

Most pipe smokers do not take the smoke into their lungs. I've seen guys blow smoke through their noses but I never have. If you ever inhale pipe smoke into your lungs you'll know not to do it again; at least in my experience.

Hey bud, you pull it in your mouth like you do with soda through a straw before you swallow, then let it out of your mouth or nose...
Exhaling through the nose is called retrohaling, and imagine using your tongue to push the smoke up and out of your nose, to me its basically the same motion as swallowing... so if you pull the smoke in, do the swallow motion, the smoke should go out of your nose and you should get more flavor

LOL, I do not believe that Winton is asking this, he posted it as an example of newbie questions he had asked when he first started smoking pipes.

Asking Questions :: General Discussion :: Pipe Smokers Forums
Look on other sites that could have been written by some idiot who smokes pot or doesnt smoke at all
attempting to make a cool article, leading people down the wrong path...
I ***TRUST*** the guys here, therefore I post and ask questions here

Look all I am saying is you can type anything into google and find an answer...
but whos to know thats the right answer...
If you get your junk stuck in a blender and someone tells you to slice it off and not worry about it...
you gonna believe it?
Or are you going to ask the topic specialists (doctor in this case) about it to get an expert opinion?

While I admit that it can sometimes be boring when I see the same questions asked over and over, the fact is that without new threads, posts, and discussions, we would no longer have active forums. We would lose a valuable resource for encouraging new pipe smokers, sharing information and supporting the hobby.
Ask away.
Post away.
Talk amongst yourselves.
