I tamp with my finger about 33.33% of the time while smoking a bowl and the other 66.66% of the time with a pipe nail.
My dad smokes a pipe occasionally after I pushed him over the ledge.
Only recently have I been able to get him to even consider using a tamper.
He's said, growing up, his dad and grandad always had a finger that was stained black from tamping their pipes.
(my grandad smoked captain black into his 90s, my great grandad a lifelong Edgeworth smoker, also into his 90s).

Yes, but there is often a glove on it! But doing that while out walking fall/winter got me kind of in the habit. I will usually have a tamper handy indoors or in nice weather but did it with my finger a few times out of reflex and found out there wasn't much to worry about.
Just realized how a wooden finger will make an awesome tamper. Need to curve one.

Nearly always tamp the char light with my finger but mostly use a tamper after that.
Just did today. Pipe slipped out of my clench. Stuck my right middle finger right in the bowl to catch. Good thing it wasn't just lit! Ash kept my finger from getting burned. Learned something new. Middle finger makes a good tamper!
Yes, pretty much exclusively. I'm never without a tamper. A callus will quickly develop and ... voila! No more pain.

In the last few weeks that's happened a lot more than I'd like to admit. I keep forgetting my accessories kit.
