My natural inclination is to tamp with my finger and I follow that inclination a fair amount of the time. I get tired of being made fun of by my family though when I have ash all over my face.

Absolutely! One of my friends in the piping world saw me doing this at the WCPS and promptly bought me a couple of Silver Gray's tampers. He thought it would be more presentable for someone of my august importance to use a proper tamper than my index finger. I love looking at those tampers. Still use my fingers though.
I've tried it only because I read about it. I pretty quickly came around to how hard is it to leave a few $1 pipe nails laying around.
Not unless I am on the battlefield, at sea, or making a pizza. Otherwise I will just use my tamper or a golf tee.

Sometimes I do , yes. Others I use the bottom of the lighter. Most of times I use tampers, ready or selfmade.

I usually tamp ash with a tamper, but, I often find myself using my thumb to push down the top layer of tobacco when packing a pipe.
Occasionally I'll use my finger when I don't have a tamper handy. Haven't quite perfected the art of not burning myself yet.
I'm not man enough to perform the Callus Phallus... perhaps it is because I'm terrified of burning material touching the tip of my member or perhaps it's simply because it wouldn't fit into even the largest of bowls. Perhaps both. ?
Either way, I can't tamp with my toes neither so I just use my finger. ?

I've often used my thumb(s) or a finger for tamping while loading the bowl, but have never felt an urge to do so once it's lit. I'll often fashion field-expedient tampers from whatever I find lying near or at hand while I'm moving about or lunting.
