The year 2001 would be the beginning of a new era for Mark and his Christmas pipes. I think these are the best Christmas pipes he has ever produced. Sometimes in the pipe world folks would lament about early production pipes being the better pipes to collect. That would not be true here
Each year would see further refinements to his techniques. The new finishes just kept getting better and better and the new logo really accented the pipes well. A new Mocha finish was added.

2006 - The Six Panel Apple
Each panel has a different grain pattern The slightly triangular shank is enhanced with an amber lucite stem. It adds to the gracefulness and balance of this 1/4 bent pipe.
This pipe is rated 4 Stars and features the Sunrise Finish.
Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes
Prices $150 to $650

Have you considered doing a display of these pipes at the Richmond pipe show? It would be incredible to see them all in one place and of course in person. I think it would be very well received.

I decided that I'm not bringing them again until I 1) complete the set and 2) build a display to properly display them. I've been kicking around ideas and talking with pipe rack makers trying to figure out a way to show them so you can see each pipe. I think I've finally figured that piece out and will try to probably build one myself.
I would love to have this pulled together by the next Richmond show since that is where the collection really began.

Hi Dave, I don't think I answered your question. The 8 was the early grading system. It meant that pipe sold for $85 when new. A 1 would be $100; 12 would be $125 and so on.
I regular pick up pipes on auction sites for far less than they should go for, for a number of reasons. An ASP pipe from 1986 priced at $125 then would easily retail for $250 to $300 now. That should indicate an estate value of around $150 today, but they can regularly be picked up for around $100.
Even looking at today's production, I bought this year's Tan blast for less than $300 and it was one of the ones he sent off to Michael Lindner to blast for him. Easily he could have gotten more than $400 for that pipe. That's the one posted on the Christmas pipe thread.
I'm looking at another one from a batch of Tan Blasts he had Rad blast for him. Those are in the $250 neighborhood. Again, he should be selling those for, well, a lot more.
Judd's pipe shop has a listing on a certain auction site for a really nice bulldog that was made in August of 89 by Mark and sold for $125 when new. Take a look at the birdseye on the top of the back side of the bowl on that pipe. Actually, all over that bowl. That is a killer pipe and we'll just have to wait and see what it sells for.
tinpan, you did answer, but it's interestintg consider the pricing in the "estate" market, I agee with your obsevations. Some very nice hand made pipes can be had at very reasonable prices. I'm about to smoke a very nice panel shanked bent Dublin by Mark, 11-87/MT 7.
That's what he is shipping right now, he had six left this morning. Obviously I didn't need four of this year's Christmas pipe. I ordered the usual smooth and dark blast. Then he sent out one of the blasts Lindner did on his mailer so I had to get that one. This time he sent out his mailer with the above pipe and ...well...now you see how I ended up with four this year.
I still shake my head when I see what he charges for some of his pipes. I even pointed that out to him and typical Mark, "I'd rather sell a pipe at a good price point and make more of them."

2007 - The Cauldron II
This is a re-make of the classic 1987 Christmas shape. It is also the twentieth anniversary for that pipe and this version is slightly smaller and available in the new finishes Mark has developed. This pipe is rated 1 Star with the Pristine finish.
Production Estimate - 80 to 90 Pipes
Prices $175 to $700
You will when you see it in person, Keep in mind a Pristine pipe begins at $260. A one star brings it up to a $325 pipe, which is a price that started getting your wallet's attention. This pipe has great tight straight grain on this side and more of a flame grain on the either side. It was nice enough to bump it to a 1 Star.
The 2006 has a straight grain all the way around the pipe. So, figure $260 for the base price and add $205 to make it a 3 star. That would make a 3 star pipe in the Pristine of Sunrise finish $465. Since the 2006 was a 4 star it was even more, I don't remember the price but it was over $500. They can get up there in the $700 range if you can find a 5 star rated pipe. They are rare.

This years pipe is a classic bulldog with a diamond shank. It has a short Cumberland ferrule and a military bit. It's the first year Mark started using intricate ferrules and it is a stunning pipe. This pipe is rated 4 Stars and features a Sunset finish.
