Last thing I will add, I do enjoy this as a hobby and not just for utilitarian purposes. But it seems like briar pipes are the “end goal” of every pipe smoker.

I think the first half of this statement explains the second.
After you read countless articles and listen to dozens of hours of podcasts and immerse yourself in the hundreds of years of culture that has resulted in the Briar pipe as it exists today, it's really hard to avoid wanting to sample that history.
