I don't understand peoples fascination with sandblasts. I wonder why they are dunhills cheapest line? And they created it, Cook is the only guy I would buy a sandblast from if we are talking over $200 which i wouldnt pay that much for a blast anyhow. But a sandblasted pipe is just like a carved pipe except its carved in a box that shoots high velocity sand. And depending on the person doing the sanding if they have patience and a little skill they can create rings where there is none. A light blast would be a more real representation of the growth rings other then that it's just carving with sand

For the same reason people like straight grains.
The reason why they're Dunhill's and I guess many other makers cheapest, is because blasting can hide an inferior grain.
I personally prefer blasts, I enjoy looking at the hollows, crags, etc. during my smoke, like I imagine followers of straight grains like to count how many grains per 0.001" there are.
In fact, I have a Dunhill's 120, from '61 (thanks to Hoosier) that if hadn't been blasted, would have been thrown out. One side of the bowl looks as though there was a knot, not everyone's idea of beauty, but I like it.

I buy blasted or rusticated pipes here and there but for me the smooth pipe is the way to go..I own 4 Petes over 300$ two naturals one flame grain spigot and terracota house pipe..I would not buy blast from Peterson for this money...There is very few blasts that I like and they are hard to find from Peterson...

Thanks Clynch.
He's a little bigger than he is in the picture. In fact he tried climbing up there yesterday, but I wasn't quick enough with the camera.
It would've made a good comparison.
It's a real life shot. Beats a planned photo any day. And that is one fine doggie.

I own many Petes significantly less than $300… Naturals, Flame Grain Spigots, House pipes. Bought them new, too.

Recent Flame Grain Petes I’ve seen barely fit in that category. But they’re stained in a dark brown that makes it near impossible to see the grain anyway. Unless you’re standing next to a nuclear blast ?

Strange that they would stain the briar so dark as to hide the grain. A cheaper alternate to blasting a lesser straight grain, perhaps. :(

My Flame grain spigot is an older European version(2014) XL02.amazing grain and pipe..It looks better than todays most naturals..Paid 315 for it back then...
