As always Embers, you make a valid point. But, mass produced pipes are not the same as independents. Where independents are producing maybe 150-200 pipes a year, mass produced are doing the same in a day or two. I guess its all about the money. Independents can't afford to dick-around with lesser briar, like the mass producers can.
Note. My estimates are probably way off, BTW.

I would agree and while I'm not a fan of factory pipes, companies like Savinelli regularly put out attractive blasts.

Not that I keep track of Sav's, but I can't recall seeing many examples of their pipes being better blasted than Petes. They seem to be in the same ballpark.

I love Peterson PLips. I think their fishtails are the worst tongue depressor wide stems in the fact of the earth.

btw, I ordered a Rua a few minutes ago. The nice thing about SP is you scan through the pipes looking for the right one. Then that’s the one you get.
The P Lip is the ONLY pipe I can smoke, Started with them years ago and said goodbye to the Flamethrower Fishtails. Lol

I don't understand peoples fascination with sandblasts. I wonder why they are dunhills cheapest line?
Beware! Your tastes can change over time. I used to loathe blasts. Now I prefer them, by a long shot, the darker the better. My ultimate pipe is the Dunhill LBS Shell straight billiard, pre-'68. Wish I had more than one.
I too am not a fan of the P-lip. Feels strange.
They hang easy, though, with bents. I like 'em for that reason.

I agree but I prefer the smoother rusticated to sandblast ... I guess a middle ground --- I only have the 1970's Sav 2614 KS and it matches my 69-71 Peterson Kapmeer 999 --- similar color - they make a nice set !
( Just my personal preference and no disparagement of other's preferences. )

I don't understand peoples fascination with sandblasts. I wonder why they are dunhills cheapest line? And they created it, Cook is the only guy I would buy a sandblast from if we are talking over $200 which i wouldnt pay that much for a blast anyhow. But a sandblasted pipe is just like a carved pipe except its carved in a box that shoots high velocity sand. And depending on the person doing the sanding if they have patience and a little skill they can create rings where there is none. A light blast would be a more real representation of the growth rings other then that it's just carving with sand
I take it you haven't heard of Walt Cannoy or Jose Rubio...

Love the looks of them but could never shell out the $256 for one. I check out the Pete lovers FB page and 1 guy who's often on it bought 2 of them. That fella has spent a lot of bucks on pipes in the fairly short time he's been a pipe smoker.
It's quite common to see people on social media trying to build an instant collection as soon as they start smoking a pipe.

Although no one would sandblast a straight grain, the quality of the end result largely depends on the quality of the grain of the wood. A pipe that has a regular sandblasting would surely have been a smooth pipe with good grain, only that it must have some defect or sand pit. On the other hand, the root of Erica Arborea does not have growth rings, it has grain.

Not true. A carved pipe is done with gouging and cutting. Sandblasting removes the softer wood and exposes the harder ring gray

And some Italians first carve and then sandblast to made interesting a pipe with absolutely no grain.

I was never much of a Peterson's. The ones that came into my hands are gone, except for some very old ones.
I am surprised by the comments. What is the current problem with Peterson's?
