To continue this long-legged thread, I'd like to remind newbies that in order to be a real pipe smoker, you must take out a mortgage on your first pipe for at least six months of your wages or salary to enter the true pipe experience and fulfill the recommendation that you buy the best you can possibly find. If you can buy a pipe at auction at at a New York City gallery, being sold between oil paintings and diamond necklaces, do so. Never mind the pipe; you can figure that out later.

LOL. My wife was planning to buy me a $5000 Castello flame for my 70th birthday but I said, "No honey [that's what I call her]. Get me 500 cobs instead!"
You remind me of Stalin (no offense). When he said the Russians were producing more tanks than the Germans. Someone countered saying yes, but the German tanks were of better quality. To which Stalin replied that quantity had a quality all it's own.

p.s. As a side note: Stalin smoked a Russian brand tobacco until the war shut the factory down. After that the U.S. State Dept. put a few pouches of American tobacco in every one of our diplomatic pouches going to Moscow. Not sure, but I seem to remember it was Edgeworth.

The English were catering to Stalin's tobacco urges long before we Americans decided to dabble in the war (Before the Japs and then the Germans declared war on us."

The T-34 with 78mm helped toss the heavier, slower (which slowed the infantry) helped throw the Germans back into Germany. Bringing more firepower through sheer numbers meant heavier, larger gun German tanks were suppressed. More is often times better than bigger or heavier when it comes to armor. Stalin knew what he was talking about that time. The Germans couldn't get their Tigers and such into reverse fast enough. rotf That is a rather oversimplification of the armored war in Europe keep in mind.

5. Tobacco is always at its optimal smoking moistIf it doesn't feel wet, dump some water on it. The wetter the tobacco, the more flavor it will have. For something truly unforgettable, use toilet water.

8. Light your tobacco using a torch, the hotter, the better. All that "soft flame" nonsense is just misinformation being spread by a bunch of snow flakes. Using an acetylene torch gives you street cred.

#5 - I‘m lucky. Where I am currently staying they have Well water and the bacteria just intensifies the flavor.

#8 - I prefer Mapp Gas as the black smoke melds beautifully with the white tobacco smoke which also intensifies the flavor.

Having been only smoking a pipe for a few months, this is exactly the kind of sage advice I have been looking for. Considering I can't even see the grain pattern on my rusticated Sav, I think it's best just to toss it. I just knew there was something lacking every time I lit a bowl...it was the lack of beautiful grain! hahau
